The Florida Alligator and Florida Crocodile live together in a few places in Florida, but with a bevy of others. Most are in the extreme south of Florida but there is one location, Salt Springs, adjacent to Lake George, where they all co-exist together as well. This is located about 50 miles south-west of Jacksonville.
Alligators tend to stay in freshwater areas and crocodiles in saltwater areas.
5. What mammal is found here on the Florida coast that was once believed to be mermaids by sailors?

Answer: Manatee

The Manatee is one of the most remarkable mammals found in Florida. These animals are vegetarians and do not harm any other animals in the world. Their only enemy is man and the boats that man uses are what kills the majority of these very friendly animals.
6. Who was the Indian Chief that refused to sign a peace treaty with the US?

Answer: Osceola

Osceola was the Chief of the Seminole indians when the US tried to get them to sign a treaty. Legend has it that when he was told of an attack on his people and was lied to by the US he refused to sign and actually stabbed his knife through the treaty when asked to sign.

The US officials did not think he could understand English, but he could, so he knew they were lying to him. They then put him in prison.
7. What famed frontiersman fought the Indians in Florida?

Answer: Davy Crockett

He had fought alongside Jackson in Florida before fighting at the Alamo.
8. What battle during the Seminole Indian war was a complete massacre for the Seminoles?

Answer: Dade Battle

During this battle the US commander had his troops circle in the only open area, and when the Seminole chief saw this he thought it was a sign from the Gods to kill all the soldiers. There were no survivors from the Dade Battlefield.
9. What city is the state capital?

Answer: Tallahassee

Most people would think of Jacksonville or Miami because they are the largest cities in Florida.
10. What in the state is considered the most important ecological resource?

Answer: Everglades

The Everglades provides most of the oxygen for the East coast of the United States.
