Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In September of 1939, after 21 years of tenuous peace, Europe was again at war. The wee small hours of what day in September saw the Nazi Germans sweep across the Polish border and take control of Poland?

Answer: September 1, 1939

In the pre-dawn hours of September 1, over 1,250,0000 German troops pushed across the Polish border. This German invasion came without a declaration of war and saw little resistance. Hitler's government ignored an ultimatum from Great Britain and France to withdraw its troops and on September 3, 1939, both countries delclared war on Germany.
2. On September 2, 1945, more than 250 allied warships lay anchored in Tokyo Bay. Just after 9:00 a.m. Tokyo time, Japan signed an official document of unconditional surrender. What site did President Truman choose for this historic event?

Answer: USS Missouri

A brief ceremony of about 20 minutes, saw the end of World War II. Above the decks of the USS Missouri flew the flags of the US, Britain, the Soviet Union, and China. Also aboard to add their signatures to those of Japan and the US were representatives from China, Britain, USSR, Australia, Canada, France, the Netherlands, and New Zealand.
3. On September 7, 1911, Guillaume Apollinaire was arrested on suspicion of stealing what famous painting from the Louvre museum in Paris?

Answer: Mona Lisa

The "Mona Lisa" was taken from the Louvre on August 22, 1911 and thus a frantic search ensued. Appollinaire was a 31 year old French poet and had been a prime suspect in the theft. However, due to a lack of evidence he was released five days later.

Answer: United States

8. On September 18, 1961, the world was shocked by the tragic death of United Nation's Secretary General, Dag Hammasrkjold. Hammarskjold died in a suspicious plane crash over Northern Rhodesia (now Zambia). What nationality was he?
