Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When, is it generally thought, that the Romans conquered the area now known as Lincolnshire?

Answer: AD 48

The Romans first built a garrison to guard the northern extremes of the empire. They later built a walled town to house demobbed soldiers.
2. What was the Roman name for Lincoln?

Answer: Lindum Colonia

The name is still used in several places in Lincoln. Most notably in Lindum Hill which is a main route from the south of the city to the cathedral area.
3. In what year did work begin on the stone cathedral?

Answer: 1072

Work began under Bishop Remigius but the plans were continually modified as work continued over the next two centuries. The roof burned down in 1141 and an earth tremor destroyed most of the building in 1185, but work always resumed and by the end of the 13th century the cathedral was complete. Probably as a result of the earth tremor of 1185 it is arguably more Gothic (showing less Norman influence) than most English cathedrals.

A library designed by Christopher Wren was added in 1660.
