Answer: Martin Luther King

It is generally recognised that the Civil Rights Movement's key history was in the period c. 1955 to 1968. The movement campaigned for equal rights for African Americans in the USA.
All of those mentioned were inspirational leaders, but Dr Martin Luther King Jr was perhaps the most prominent. He was a Baptist minister who led the Montgomery Bus Boycott of 1955 and shaped the non-violence ethos of the movement. A gifted orator, his "I Have A Dream" address of 1963 became widely regarded by historians as one of the greatest political rallying calls of the 20th Century. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964. At the age of 35, he was the youngest recipient up to that point.
He was assassinated on April 4th, 1968

Chang Kai Shek was Chairman of the Nationalist Government of China between October 1928 and December 1931 and again between August 1943 and May 1948.
In this latter period, he battled the emerging Communist Party, but lost and his Government was forced to flee to Taiwan. He ruled Taiwan until his death in 1975.
In the West, he was feted by right wingers because of his opposition to communism.

Its ethos was one of non-violent opposition and members took part in many protest marches. It gained the support of many liberal intellectuals, along with stars of music and screen.

Fidel Castro was one of the leaders of the Cuban Revolution, which brought communism to the island after the defeat the pro-western Batista government.
Almost immediately the island found itself isolated, with only the Soviet Union to call on for moral and practical support.
While many in Cuba welcomed the change of Government, many more chose to brave the dangers of a sea escape to the USA. It's unknown how many died in the attempt.
The USA was behind a number of attempts to overthrow Castro. He was Prime Minister of Cuba from February 1959 to December 1976, and then served as President until he resigned on health grounds in February 2008.

Lenin was one of the leaders of the Russian Revolution and headed the Soviet state from 1917 to 1924. He survived several assassination attempts, after which he ordered the brutal repression of any opponents. Many were killed, thousands more imprisoned. He died on January 21st 1924 after a succession of strokes.

Joseph McCarthy was born in Grand Chute, Wisconsin, on November 14th 1908 and died on May 2nd 1957. For the 10 years before his death he was Republican Senator for the State of Wisconsin. He packed a lot of controversy into that time and chief among that were his claims that the fabric of American society was being eroded by communist subversion.

The anti-communist fervor he whipped up led to the term "McCarthyism" being created. The right wing loved McCarthy, but liberals hated him. The veteran broadcaster Edward R. Murrow exposed many of McCarthy's tactics in his television show "See It Now". Eventually the US Senate censured McCarthy and his career was ruined.

The family's fortunes were built on the initial oil explorations of George Getty, an independent oilman in Oklahoma in the early part of the 20th century. He and the first John Paul Getty formed the Getty Oil Company in 1916.

Under Hoover, the FBI became a powerful and effective organisation, though Hoover was accused of using its powers to gather information illegally on those he believed posed a threat to the establishment.
