Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Georges Méliès' 1902 'Le Voyage Dans la Lune' (A Trip to the Moon) is generally recognized as the first science fiction film. It depicts an astronomer's dream in which a group of men are shot in a space capsule from a giant cannon to the Moon, battle with Moon men, and then return safely to the Earth. On whose novel or novels did Méliès base his film?

Answer: Jules Verne & H. G. Wells

The film was based on Verne's 1865 novel 'From the Earth to the Moon', the title was 'borrowed' for the 1998 HBO mini-series. In the book Verne correctly describes many aspects of space travel, such as the velocity necessary for a vehicle to escape the Earth's gravity, launching of spacecraft from Florida, and landing of spacecraft in the ocean. Verne wrote many novels with futuristic themes, including 'Around the World in Eighty Days', 'Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea', and 'Journey to the Center of the Earth'. Update 01/06/11: Since this quiz was written additional information has come to light.

Although no actual screen credit was given to any writer, many film historians believe that Melies was inspired by and the film was loosely based on two popular novels of the time, 'From the Earth to the Moon' by Jules Verne and 'The First Men in the Moon' by H. G. Wells.
2. Orson Welles caused a panic when he presented a radio play based on H.G. Wells' 'The War of the Worlds'. In the book (and the radio play and later motion picture, for that matter) what is it that finally defeats the alien invaders?

Answer: bacteria

The Martians had no immunity to earth germs, which killed 'em dead! Germ theory was a very new idea when Wells wrote his novel in 1898. Wells also wrote 'The Invisible Man', 'The Time Machine', and 'The Island of Dr. Moreau'.
3. This philosopher envisioned a world in which the working class would control the means of production and governments would eventually become unnecessary.

Answer: Karl Marx

Karl Marx was one of the most influential thinkers of the 19th century.
4. This architect proposed building a mile high skyscraper in Chicago.

Answer: Frank Lloyd Wright

Wright dubbed his design 'Mile-High Illinois' and envisioned it to be a true city within a city. It was to have 528 floors and house over a million people. When he unveiled a model of the structure in 1956, he was quoted as saying, 'No one can afford to build it now, but in the future no one will be able to afford not to build it'. So far the design remains only on paper, but you never know.
5. This self taught architect and engineer designed a house made of lightweight materials that was supposed to be delivered to the home site by dirigible. Hint: It was called the 4D Dymaxion House.

Answer: R. Buckminster Fuller

Bucky also designed the Dymaxion Car, which looked remarkably like the minivans of today, and the Geodesic Dome. He never earned a university degree, but during his life he did receive 47 honorary doctorates.
6. In the original 1968 version of "Planet of the Apes", what landmark does Charlton Heston's character Taylor discover in the final scene?

Answer: The Statue of Liberty

It is at this point that he realizes he is still on Earth, and that human civilization has been destroyed by a nuclear war. This is an unlikely vision of our future.
7. Here's another Chuck Heston nugget. In the movie 'Soylent Green', the year is 2022, New York has reached a population of 40 million, food is in very short supply, and our man Charleton is a homicide detective. Most of the population survives on 'synthetic' foods supplied by the Soylent corporation. He makes a startling discovery, that Soylent Green is made from ...?

Answer: people

Who can forget Heston screaming, 'Soylent Green is people!'?
8. In the movie 'Blade Runner', Harrison Ford's character, Deckard, is a bounty hunter for the police. He specializes in going after androids who have gotten out of control. What are these very human robots called?

Answer: replicants

Deckard falls in love with one of the replicants, Rachael. She is so perfectly made that she doesn't even know that she's not a real human. Ridley Scott's movie is based on the novel 'Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?', by Philip K. Dick.
9. What is the name of the all-powerful computer network of the future in the 'Terminator' movies?

Answer: Skynet

If my computer starts getting too big for it's britches, I'll pull the damn plug. I mean it!
10. How many years did Adolf Hitler say his Reich would last?

Answer: 1,000

Hitler's vision of the future was a particularly frightening one. Think how different the world would be if our fathers and grandfathers hadn't won the war. We owe them a lot.
11. This movie tells the tale of a neurotic New Yorker who is frozen and then thawed out in the future.

Answer: Sleeper

Woody Allen is great in this. I love the Volkswagen scene!
12. On the original 'Star Trek' television series, what material is the source of a starship's power?

Answer: dilithium crystals

Antimatter is released through dilithium crystals into matter to create power. Apparently, long term exposure to dilithium crystals has beneficial effects on the male reproductive system. Just ask Scotty!
13. This author penned '1984', a story of the future in which all personal liberties have been extinguished and the all-seeing 'Big Brother' controls all aspects of life.

Answer: George Orwell

Orwell also wrote 'Animal Farm'.
14. This author wrote the hauntingly fascinating 'Martian Chronicles'.

Answer: Ray Bradbury

This is an excellent book, but they made a really awful movie from it, starring Rock Hudson. Spielberg's Amblin' Entertainment is working on a remake due to be out in 2001. Let's hope this one is better.
15. In '2001, A Space Odyssey', what object do they find that finally provides proof that man is not alone in the universe?

Answer: the black monolith, on the Moon

They find the second black monolith on the dark side of the Moon.
