HMS Dreadnought was first of a new and revolutionary type of battleship. She was the first capital ship to use steam turbines and reached a record speed of 21kts. She was built in 14 months, which was another record.

When Admiral Fisher returned to the post of First Sea Lord he insisted on building new battlecruisers after the success of the Invincible and Inflexible in the Battle of the Falklands. The Cabinet finally agreed when Fisher promised to build them as fast as the Dreadnought ten years earlier.

His influence on the ship was disastrous. In Fisher's opinion speed was the best protection and so the ships had only the scale of armour as the Invincible.

The Scharnhorst class was a compromise between various political, military and technical requirements. The displacement of the ships was in accordance the Washington Treaty. First the ships were supposed be armed with 15in guns, but Hitler didn't want to provoke the British and so the ships were finally armed with 11in guns. Often mistakenly classified as battlecruisers, these ships had in fact almost as much protection like the legendary Bismarck. Even though the Gneisenau was the first of class laid down and completed the class was named Scharnhorst class due to traditional reasons. Ships: Scharnhorst & Gneisenau

A further improvement was to place all turrets in the centreline allowing the ship to fire full broadsides of all 10 guns. A weakness in these ships was that the tripod mast was between the funnels. The Rivadavia class was the Argentinian response to the Brazilian Minas Gerais class being constructed in Great Britain. In many experts' opinion she was a considerably better fighting ship than any of the 6 British 12in gun battlecruisers.

The Queen Elizabeth class was originally intended as improved Iron Dukes but rumors that the Germans were planning an increase in calibre forced the british admirality to up-gun the new battleships.
They were planned with five 15in turrets but it was soon realised that four 15in guns would give a broadside of 15,000lb against 14,000lb in the Iron Duke. The space saved was used for additional boilers giving the Queen Elizabeth's a speed of 23kts.

The Courageous class was intended to support Admiral Fisher's proposed Baltic plans. The Baltic plans were never worked out but it can be assumed that they were to provide gunfire support. So the ships were converted to aircraft carriers shortly after the war.
