Question 1 of 10
1. April 24, 2013 marked the day over 3000 workers went to their job at Rana Plaza. Soon after their arrival, in a "New York Minute", the eight-story building collapsed. The final death toll surpassed 1100, making it at the time the highest death toll for a structural failure in world history. Where did this disaster take place? Hint

Question 2 of 10
2. In 1977 a series of events required five large commercial aircraft to be diverted from their original destination to Tenerife Airport. And in a "New York Minute", everyone's world changed when one of the planes attempted to return to the air after a two hour delay on the ground, and struck another jet plane waiting on the runway. This disaster still ranked as the world's worst aviation disaster nearly forty years after the incident. Where is the island of Tenerife where the accident took place? Hint

Question 3 of 10
3. In 1986, the Space Shuttle Challenger took off from Cape Canaveral, Florida with seven crew members including the first civilian in space. And in a "New York Minute", the space program was radically changed forever when the shuttle disintegrated, resulting in the loss of life for all seven on board. Of these four, who was not a casualty of the Challenger disaster? Hint

Question 4 of 10
4. A government-owned ferry christened Le Joola made its way to its usual destination on September 26, 2002, carrying over 1900 passengers. But in a "New York Minute", its usual voyage would be its last, capsizing due to a violent nighttime storm. Only 64 survived. This disaster occurred off the coast of which African country, the country which owned the boat? Hint

Question 5 of 10
5. On June 11, 1955 a 24-hour road race featuring the world's top drivers and car manufacturers began without a hitch. But on Lap 35, in a "New York Minute", a collision at 150 mph (240 km/hr) sent massive amounts of debris flying into the stands. The result: 84 people died, making it the largest loss of life directly due to a sporting event. Where did this catastrophe take place? Hint

Question 6 of 10
6. In February of 2003, many rock fans came to a nightclub called "The Station" in West Warwick, Rhode Island, USA. The opening song of the show featured some flashy pyrotechnics. Question 9 of 10
9. On March 18, 1925, people in the Midwest had their lives turned upside down in a "New York Minute". A large storm produced twelve tornadoes rather early in the tornado season for the United States, but it was one single tornado, now called the "Tri-State Tornado", that left the largest storm casualty count in the history of the United States. Which of these states was not directly impacted by the Tri-State Tornado? Hint

Question 10 of 10
10. The Ancash Earthquake in May 31, 1970 didn't affect many people directly as it occurred in the Pacific Ocean. But a resulting avalanche off of Mt. Huascarán caused a 3,000 ft. (910 m) wide swath of ice, mud and debris to overtake much of the Ancash and Libertad regions near the epicenter of the earthquake, and in a "New York Minute", this landslide resulted in an estimated 20,000 casualties, making it the highest death toll by result of landslide/avalanche. In what country did this tragedy occur? Hint

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts

Answer: Dhaka, Bangladesh

Much criticism came upon the Bangladeshi government for not accepting aid in rescuing survivors. Many of the rescue workers wore only sandals and no personal protective equipment. About 2500 were rescued but the death toll likely would have gone down considerably with professional assistance in the rescue effort. Lawsuits and riots occurred in the aftermath when documented evidence was brought to the forefront showing major structural defects to the building's foundation prior to the collapse.

Answer: Canary Islands

Tenerife is a Spanish island of the Canary Islands, lying more off the coast of Africa than Spain. The airport was not equipped for larger airliners, but traffic control had it as the only option at the time to hold existing flights. The entire event stemmed from a bomb going off at the main airport of the Canary Islands, and upon landing at Tenerife, the planes experienced heavy fog. Lack of clear communication and the fog all culminated to one jet taking off without clearance. 583 people died from the two planes; only 61 survived.

Answer: Robert Crippen

Robert Crippen was actually one of two men to pilot the original Space shuttle on its maiden space voyage.

Seventeen percent of America watched the lift-off live including many children in school, as Christa McAuliffe, a teacher, was the first civilian to be OK'ed for a space mission. Much of the plane's parts had not been tested for temperatures below freezing, and the temperature at takeoff was 31 degrees. Others on the ship to give their lives in the name of space exploration beyond Christa, Judith and Francis were Michael Smith, Ronald McNair, Ellison Onizuka, and Greg Jarvis.

Answer: Senegal

The ship was only designed to hold 580 paying customers, but often held many more. On this voyage, over 1,000 tickets were sold and nearly that many more were on board riding for free. The weight of people sleeping on the deck put extra imbalance on the ship.

The storm capsized the boat in a matter of five minutes. Many people survived the actual capsizing, but did not survive the waters as rescue operations didn't start for several hours. This death toll exceeds the loss of life from the Titanic disaster. Massive investigations ensued trying to find out why the boat was where it was at the time of the accident and why the ferry had been permitted to hold that many passengers.

Answer: Le Mans, France

The 24 hours of Le Mans is the most famous full day race, but this event laid a pall on all of road racing. A quick brake by one of the drivers led to a chain reaction where one of the vehicles collided and disintegrated, throwing the hood (bonnet) into the stands at breakneck speed, literally decapitating many of those who were killed.

The engine also hurtled into the stands among other parts of the car. Prior to this disaster, safety measures in road racing were not a priority, as the track area had nothing designed to block anything from the track from striking the spectators.

While there have been larger losses of life at other sporting events (usually from a spectator area collapsing or catching fire) this is the worst sports disaster casualty-wise that was a result of the actual happenings of the event itself.
6. In February of 2003, many rock fans came to a nightclub called "The Station" in West Warwick, Rhode Island, USA. The opening song of the show featured some flashy pyrotechnics. But in a New York Minute, the nightclub caught fire and 100 people perished from the disaster. Can you name the band that was performing at the time of the concert and resulting fire?

Answer: Great White

Illegal outdoor fireworks/pyrotechnics were set off by the manager which ignited the flammable sound proof material on the ceiling of the nightclub. Sadly, and shamefully, some of the emergency exits were locked and chained, which prevented any departure from these vital exits. The panic and lack of working exits resulted in 100 deaths, including Ty Longley, the guitarist of Great White.
7. On December 12, 1917, during World War I, a train was scheduled to depart, loaded with members of the military coming back from the front. Soon after departure, in a "New York Minute", the overloaded train derailed going down a valley; the resulting crash and fire killed approximately 700 soldiers, with less than 200 survivors. On what railway did this tragedy occur, resulting in the country's loss of hundreds of its military members?

Answer: Culoz-Modane Railway, France

A decision was made by the military to add two extra carriages to an already long train. This created a nineteen(!) carriage train with one locomotive. Adding to the likelihood of an accident, only the first three passenger cars were fitted with proper air brakes.

Originally refusing to carry an unsafe load, threats of military discipline were made to the train's engineer, and the train departed. The unsatisfactory brakes on the cars failed, and the train went down the Maurienne valley at speeds nearly 2.5 times the maximum permitted speed.

The derailment prompted a fire, caused by candles being lit during the voyage (the electrical system had gone out), and by some unauthorized grenades taken by the soldiers on leave. An estimated 700 men were killed and the details were kept secret during World War One.
8. All was well on Christmas Day 2004 in Indonesia and surrounding countries. But approximately one hour after Christmas ended, in a "New York Minute", disaster occurred. A 9.1 earthquake rocked the ocean nearby, and the resulting tsunamis killing approximately 230,000 people. In what ocean did this earthquake originate?

Answer: Indian Ocean

Now scientifically called the Sumatra-Andaman earthquake, the resulting tsunamis ranged as high as 100 feet (30 metres). The violent earthquake caused other tremors as far away as Alaska, USA, over 7,000 miles (11,200 km) away. Hardest hit was Sumatra, Indonesia, with about 170,000 casualties.

The energy produced by the tsunami waves was more than twice ALL of the explosives used in World War II including the two atomic bombs.

Answer: Oklahoma

Often Oklahoma and Kansas are in the worst affected area of tornado destruction. This tornado traveled for three and a half hours, over a 219-mile (352 km) stretch. Thirteen actual communities were directly in the path, and after all the dust had settled, 695 people had lost their lives just from this single tornado. With technology in place nowadays for warning the public about active and potential tornadoes, an event like this likely will not happen again in the USA.

However, in third world countries such as Bangladesh, the infrastructure there lends to larger death tolls even in recent times.

In 1989 approximately 1,300 lost their lives to a tornado in Daultipur, Bangladesh, making it the largest death toll to date from one single tornado.

Answer: Peru

Speeds were estimated at over 170 mph (270 km/hr) for the debris, which traveled over 11 miles (18 km). The earthquake itself was measured at 7.9 on the Richter scale. Two towns in the one-mile (1.6 km) long path of debris were completely engulfed. Another 40,000 people lost their lives due to the earthquake, but 20,000 just from this avalanche alone.
