Answer: Jamaica

 Originally occupied by the Spanish, the British under Sir William Penn, father of the founder of Pennsylvania, seized the island in 1655. Britain formally gained possession by the Treaty of Madrid in 1670.

Answer: Bahamas

 When the Europeans first arrived they reported the islands were lushly forested and they cleared the trees to make way for plantations. The soil was unsuited to the growing of cotton and the plantations failed.
