1. Which of these scholars did NOT live at the time of the Gupta dynasty, which ruled much of India from about AD 240-550?

Answer: Tulsidas

The Gupta period produced scholars such as Kalidasa, Aryabhata, Varahamihira, Vishnu Sharma, and Vatsyayana who made great advancements in many academic fields. Among these, Aryabhata was a great mathematician whose major works include "Aryabhatiya", which covers arithmetic, algebra, plane trigonometry, and spherical trigonometry.

Vishnu Sharma was an Indian scholar and author who is believed to have written the Panchtantra collection of fables. The philosopher Tulsidas lived much later, from 1532-1623.
2. The Delhi Sultanate Delhi lasted for almost two centuries. Who is the only female ruler you will find in this period?

Answer: Razia Sultana

There were very few women who ruled in India in those days. In fact, India society had always been male dominated. However, Razia Sultana was the Sultan (Princess) of Delhi in India from 1236 to 1240.
3. Who was the first emperor of the Mughal Empire?

Answer: Babur

Babur was born in 1483 in Andijan in modern Uzbekistan. A highly successful military adventurer, he established a formidable power base in Kabul from 1504 onwards. From there, he went on to defeat the Lodi dynasty in the First Battle of Panipat in 1526, conquer the Delhi Sultanate and establish the Mughal Empire.

Babur wrote his memoirs, the "Baburnama", which are a key source for information on his life. He died in 1531 in his capital at Agra. Nine years later his remains were transferred, in accordance with wishes he had expressed in his lifetime, to Kabul. He had a profound influence on Indian archicture.
