President Nixon, facing impeachment in Congress, for alleged crimes related to the Watergate scandal, announced his resignation, leaving Gerald Ford to finish out his second term.

Paul McCartney marked the end of an era when he announced he was leaving the Beatles, thereby disbanding the group. McCartney said it was because of "personal, business and musical differences, but most of all because I have a better time with my family".
