Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What were the name of the Italian mini-submarines that entered Alexandria Harbor?

Answer: Maiali (pigs)

They destroyed some British ships there!
2. What island resisted years of bombing by Axis powers in WWII?

Answer: Malta

This was a major accomplishment by British forces in the Mediterranean. Roughly half way between Gibraltar and Alexandria in Egypt, Malta was of immense strategic importance for much of WWII. Moreover, Malta until the Allies occupied Sicily, Malta was only a few minutes by air from some Italian bases.
3. Who was the successor to Mussolini in 1943?

Answer: Marshal Badoglio

Umberto II was the last King of Italy (till 1946), Kesselring was the German Commanding Officer in occupied Italy and Giuseppe Garibaldi was an Italian national hero in the 19th century during the unification of Italy.
4. In what year did Italy quit the Axis powers and switch sides?

Answer: 1943

The mass of Italians never was happy fighting alongside Nazi Germany and they knew when to quit. Unfortunately, the war continued for two more years, also on Italian soil.
5. In whicb city or town was the Fascist Government in Italy based after the armistice with Allied powers?

Answer: Salo'

Salo is a lake resort in Northern Italy, and Mussolini based his puppet government there in 1943.
6. Where did Allied forces land in mainland Europe in 1943?

Answer: Salerno, Italy

It is said that the choice was made because of the proximity of airfields in occupied Sicily. Probably a northerly shore would have shortened the bloody campaign.
7. Which monastery was destroyed by Allied forces?

Answer: Monte Cassino

Allied troops bombed this ancient monument believing that Nazis were hiding in it, but the Germans had fled. The bombing was controversial from the outset.
8. What kind of ships did the Italian Navy lack in WWII?

Answer: Aircraft carriers

Mussolini thought that Italy itself would be a giant carrier - very clever indeed!
9. Which famous book was written by an Allied pilot shot down at sea in his fighter plane in the Mediterranean in WWII?

Answer: 'The Little Prince'

The pilot was Antoine de St. Exupery. He was a Frenchman flying an American P38 Lightning.
10. Japanese Admiral Yamamoto was inspired to attack Pearl Harbor by the British raid on a Mediterranean port. Which one?

Answer: Taranto

British Swordfish aircraft destroyed the bulk of Italian Navy.
Of course, there was an important difference: war between Kingdom of Italy and British Empire had already been declared five months earlier. It wasn't a pre-emptive strike.
