The Battle of Kapyong was fought between Chinese communist troops and soldiers of the 3rd Battalion RAR, on 23-24th April 1951. The Australian casualties were; 32 KIA and 53 WIA. The action was responsible for preventing the Chinese reaching and capturing Seoul.

The small forceheld the Viet Cong for many hours in appalling weather conditions before being eventually evacuated. Casualties were as follows: D Coy, 18 KIA, 24 WIA, Viet Cong over 250 KIA. The Viet Cong removed their wounded and many dead during their withdrawal.
