During WWII, Bushido was the Japanese soldiers' code of conduct. It stressed duty, and loyalty to the Emperor. However, it was a far cry from the original and true meaning of Bushido.

The majority of the Banzai charges were usually launched at night as a last resort in order to avoid capture and the shame of defeat. Even the wounded were expected to participate or destroy themselves to avoid capture.
