5. In what year did Elizabeth Cady meet the abolitionist Henry Stanton?

Answer: 1839

Elizabeth Cady was a major supporter of women's rights, as was Henry Stanton, whom she later married. In their wedding ceremony, the couple ommitted the word "obey" from their wedding vows. Women had very few rights at that time. When they married, all of their possessions were given to the husband and husbands also had the right to hit their wives as long as they didn't seriously hurt them. Times sure have changed.
6. Which were the major Axis powers of World War Two?

Answer: Germany, Italy, and Japan

WW2 was mainly a clash of the Axis powers - Germany, Italy, and Japan, and others against the Allies- Britain, France, China, the Soviet Union. WW2 began when Adolf Hitler's armies invaded Poland in 1939. Hitler overran most of Europe, which left Britain (and later the Soviet Union) to fend for themselves. On December 7, 1941, after President Roosevelt declared aid to the Allies, Japan launched a surprise attack on the American base of Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.

After that, the United States entered the war, taking the side of the Allies.

Many sieges took place, like that of the Soviet Union and Stalingrad. Europe became involved after the D-Day invasion of June 6, 1944. Germany eventually surrendered after Hitler committed suicide. Harry Truman, who replaced FDR after his death in 1945, made a decision that brought Japan to its knees ...

He used the newly invented atomic bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Japan.
7. Who clashed in a conflict known as the Cold War?

Answer: U.S. and the Soviet Union

For 46 years, the conflict between the U.S. and the Soviet Union was known as the Cold War. After the beginning of the Korean War, President Truman demanded that a United Nations force stop North Korea from invading South Korea. However, a Soviet-backed government ruled North Korea.

The conflicts between the U.S. and the Soviet Union continued to unfold and get worse, and then the Korean War began. Americans feared that communists were working inside the U.S. To ease the worries, Truman ordered loyalty checks to everyone who worked in the government and gave Congress permission to carry out investigations. Korea, Vietnam, Chile, Grenada, El Salvador, Somalia, Nicaragua, Cuba, Iraq, Iran, Hungary, Greece, Malaysia, Czechoslovakia, Afghanistan, Poland, and many others were major hot spots for the Cold War.
8. On what day did the siege of the Alamo begin?

Answer: February 23, 1836

The Texans had taken up posts in a Spanish mission we now call the Alamo. When Mexican troops attacked, the Texans found themselves outnumbered, 150 to 6,000. Although young William B. Travis sent out for larger forces, only 40 available Texans responded.

The count of Texans was now 190. When the battle ended, 1,500 Mexicans and 180 Texans lay dead. Most of the surviving Texans were executed. The fall of the Alamo made the Texans thirsty for revenge. They attacked Mexican troops on the San Jacinto river.

The battle known as the battle of San Jacinto lasted 18 minutes. The victorious Texans killed 630 Mexicans and captured 700. Later they captured Santa Ana, leader of the Mexican forces, and forced him to sign a treaty giving Texas independence.
9. What type of surgery did future president James K. Polk have at the age of 17?

Answer: removal of urinary stones

After suffering severe stomach pains, Polk's doctor recommended surgery to remove urinary stones. He was strapped to a table and the surgery was performed while he was awake as there was no anesthesia at that time (apart from brandy).
10. What happened on October 29, 1929?

Answer: The New York stockmarket crashed

The crash of the Stock Market was a major event that triggered the Great Depression. By 1933, 25% of American workers were unemployed, 22% more than when the Stock Market crashed. The Great Depression lessened when the New Deal began. The New Deal promised relief for the unemployed and unwealthy.

The New Deal had great impacts. Herbert Hoover became president in 1929. The nineteenth amendment was not signed in 1929, nor did the Social Security System begin then.
