Answer: First dot com was registered.

Symbolics, Inc registered the first ever dot com in March of 1985. While the company made history, it didn't last long enough to see the "internet boom" that began in 1997. The company went out of business in May of 1996. The large internet domain boom started in 1997, when more than one million sites were registered for the first time.
2. 1986: What major meltdown, one of the worst in history, happened during this year?

Answer: The Chernobyl nuclear complex had a meltdown in

31 people died during the nuclear meltdown on April 26, 1986. Chernobyl, at the time, was the worst nuclear meltdown in history. It was the only level 7 meltdown on record until the Fukushima Daiichi meltdown that happened in 2011.
3. 1987: Which video game franchise launched its first title this year?

Answer: Final Fantasy

The "Final Fantasy" series was launched as a last ditch effort to make a video game by Squaresoft, the game developer. The game was so popular that it spawned more than a dozen sequels.
4. 1988: What sport was Ben Johnson disqualified from after winning a gold medal during the Olympic games in Seoul, South Korea during this year?

Answer: Track and Field

Johnson, who was born in Jamaica, ran for Canada. He set the world record in the 100 meter dash at 9.79 seconds, only to have it stripped away two days later when his drug test results came in.

He later admitted that he had been using steroids since 1981, but was allowed to keep his two bronze medals from the 1984 Olympics as he hadn't tested positive at that time.
5. 1989: What was the name of the unmanned spacecraft that ascended into outer space and was used to study Jupiter and its moons during this year?

Answer: Galileo

Galileo launched on Oct. 18, 1989. It finally arrived in orbit of Jupiter in Dec. of 1995, and was used at that point to study the planet and its moons.

The space station was in orbit of Jupiter until September of 2003 when it fell out of orbit.
6. 1990: A wall was built in Germany to separate the eastern and western portions of the country. Construction was completed that year.

Answer: False

The wall was actually separating just the two sides of Berlin, not the entire country, but Iron Curtain ran through Germany, dividing it into two states.

The wall wasn't built in 1990, but instead deconstruction officially began on June 13, 1990.

Construction of the wall began in 1961. It was built by the East German government.
7. 1991: Codenamed Operation Desert Storm, what was the official name of the war that had combat begin in this year?

Answer: Gulf War

The photo is a representation of "Baghdad" with a bomb over it.

The build up to the war began in August, 1990, but the actual combat started in January, 1991. Most of the fighting was to remove Iraqi troops from Kuwait.

The war was so unpopular that historians cite it was a major factor for President George H.W. Bush not being re-elected in 1992.

The Gulf War was the first major war in world history to have live news broadcasts from the front lines.
8. 1992: The Mall of America opened during this year. What state is the mall located in?

Answer: Minnesota

Located at 60 East Broadway in Bloomington, Minn. the Mall of America was the largest shopping mall in the country when it opened.

There were more than 500 stores, and more than 12,000 parking spaces when the shopping center opened.

The mall saw an average of 40 million visitors annually in the first ten years it was open.
9. 1993: The world's best female tennis player, Monica Seles, was stabbed and killed while playing in a tournament during this year.

Answer: False

At the time Monica Seles was the number one ranked tennis player in the world.

During a tournament in Germany, Günter Parche, jumped onto the court and stabbed Seles.

Parche was an obsessed fan of Seles', top rival Steffi Graf. Seles returned to tennis in 1995, but only won one additional major championship the rest of her career. She had eight before the stabbing.
10. 1994: The Flavr Savr was the first genetically modified organism allowed to be sold to the general public as a food source in the United States. What type of food was it that hit shelves in this year?

Answer: A tomato

The Flavr Savr was developed to have a longer shelf life than regular tomatoes. On May 18, 1994 the Flavr Savr was officially granted license to be released in the United States.

Production of the tomato stopped in 1997 as it was still not turning a profit.
