Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What type(s) of evidence do historians have to verify that events in pre-history actually occurred?

Answer: all of these

Historians use all of these items to verify that events throughout time have actually occurred. Fossils of human remains or of animals, insects, etc, can help both historians and archaeologists determine what creatures existed at a point in time and how they have evolved into the present. Tools work in the same manner as fossils as historians can determine that the more complicated the tools, buildings, etc are, the more sophisticated the society was during a particular period in time. Hieroglyphics need to be interpreted by archaeologists and historians in order to obtain any meaning.

These are simple pictures that have been painted or carved in rock or tablets and help historians and archaeologists determine events that have happened. For example, if there is a picture drawn of a battle, historians may conclude that a serious war or fight may have occurred within a specific society.
2. Which of the following items was found in the Divje Babe I cave?

Answer: Flute

The oldest flute was found in Divje Babe I which is located in Slovenia. This flute was discovered by paleontologist Ivan Turk from the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts. This flute was estimated to be 45,000 years of age in 1995.
3. The Stone Age is the Pre-Historical era in which historians believe that humans began the practise of farming and agriculture. Within the Stone Age classification of the three aged system, there are various sub-groups that classify the evolution of humans. Which of the following subgroups is most closely associated with agricultural development?

Answer: Neolithic

The term "neolithic" does not refer to a specific chronological period, but to behavioural and cultural features and the development of crops, farming, and the domestication of various animals during the Stone Age.
4. According to scientists, in which of these eras was the Solar System created?

Answer: Hadean

The Hadean geological era occurred around 4.5-3.8 billion years ago. Many scientists and historians believe that "the oldest meteorites and lunar rocks are about 4.5 billion years old, but the oldest Earth rocks currently known are 3.8 billion years old". According to the Wikipedia article on the Solar System, "[the system] formed from the gravitational collapse of a giant molecular cloud".
5. Which of the following archaeological deposits contains evidence of the first discovered specimens of Homo habilis?

Answer: Bed I

Beds I-IV are all archaelogical deposits within Olduvai Gorge in Tanzania. Bed I contains evidence of human campsites, living quarters, and the earliest forms of man made tools.
6. Pre-history warfare has been debated by archaeologists and historians alike. Evidence of the first Pre-historic battle were found on the Nile near the Egypt/Sudan border. At this historic battle location is a mass grave. What is this mass gravesite called?

Answer: Cemetery 117

Cemetery 117 was discovered in 1964 during the construction of the Aswan Dam in Egypt. Although debated somewhat, most historians and archaeologists agree that this is the oldest known warfare location in the world.
7. Pre-historic music of non-European origin that survives today is often referred to as what type of music?

Answer: Folk

Traditional Native American music and Australian Aboriginal music by pre-literate tribes has been studied by historians and has often been compared to that of modern folk music due to its simplicity in sound and lyrics.
8. One of the most famous portable pre-historic works of art has often been referred to as the "Venus of Willendorf". What pre-historic era has this work of art been linked to?

Answer: Palaeolithic

This particular work of art has been linked to the "upper" Palaeolithic period. Both cave paintings and portable art workings have been linked to this period in pre-history. Many historians speculate that only Homo sapiens were able to produce such works of art because Homo neanderthalensis were not developed enough to contribute to such complicated works of art.
9. The Bering Land Bridge has been thought to have allowed humans to migrate from one continent to another. What two present day locations are thought to have been connected by the Bering Land Bridge?

Answer: Russia and Alaska

"It is thought that the bridge "rose" from the ocean as vast amounts of ocean water became tied up in the enormous glaciers of the last ice age. That exposed the broad continental shelves now covered by the Bering Strait and created the land bridge."

10. The Epipalaeolithic Era has often been characterized by the presence of microliths. What are microliths?

Answer: Small stone tools

"These prehistoric tools were often formed as various kinds of triangles, lunate shaped, trapezes etc. These tools have often been used by historians for dating purposes. It has been theorized that these tools were often used as barbs for arrows and spears."
