Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. At which powwow is the title of "Miss Indian World" given out?

Answer: Gathering of Nations

The Gathering of Nations is a four day powwow that is held in Albuquerque, NM.
2. Which reservation holds the annual Eastern Shoshone Days powwow?

Answer: Wind River Reservation

Many drums and dancers attend this eventful powwow. It's near Lander and Riverton, WY.
3. In the Women's Dance Categories, there is one category that is often referred to as the "Healing Dance". Which is it?

Answer: Jingle Dress

The story I've heard about the Jingle Dress is that there was an old man that got very sick and he had a dream about making this dress with rolled snuff-can lids sewed to it. His granddaughter made such a dress and danced wearing it - and he was healed. (There are many versions of the story).
4. The Grass Dance is an old dance that came from stomping grass down to make a campsite for Tepees.

Answer: True

Grass Dances developed when everyone stomped down tall grass on the prairies to make a good campsite for tepees and cooking areas. If you watch Grass Dancers, you can see how they imitate "stomping" movements.
5. Fancy Feather is the most recent style of dancing in the Men's categories.

Answer: True

Fancy Feather was developed as a tourist attraction, but it is one that arguably involves the most stamina.
6. A dancer should usually wear their number on their right-hand side.

Answer: false

It is usually worn on the left-hand side because when dancing in a Grand Entry it's usually in a clockwise form. The judges stand on the outside of the dancers, so it can be easily seen.
7. What is the trademark food sold at a powwow?

Answer: Indian Tacos

Powwow burgers are great ... but it's got to be Indian Tacos.
8. What is the person called that makes sure all the dancers are in place, runs the microphone around, and generally keeps things in order?

Answer: Arena Director

Arena Directors are crucial to a good powwow, not only for their knowledge of powwow criteria, but their stamina needed to keep things in place.
9. If the Arena Director puts a hat on the floor during dancing, what has happened?

Answer: An eagle feather fell off someones regalia.

After the song is over, they usually have an elder pray for the feather, because an eagle feather falling on the ground represents a fallen warrior, and it needs to be prayed for before being picked up again.
10. And for those hardcore powwowers, which drum group made the 49 song "Darling, Don't Cry"?

Answer: Red Bull Singers

One of my favorites ...
