1. Name the two English monarchs who died at Richmond Palace.

Answer: Henry VII & Elizabeth I

Henry VII built Richmond Palace on the site of the former Palace of Shene, which had been damaged by fire in 1497.
2. When was St Paul's school (situated since 1968 in Barnes) first established by John Colet?

Answer: 1509

The school was originally in St Paul's Churchyard, but after the Great Fire (1666) new school buildings were erected in Cheapside, in the City of London. The school moved to Hammersmith in 1884 and to Barnes in 1968. Samuel Pepys (an Old Pauline) is said to have played truant from school to witness the execution of Charles I.
3. Richmond was actually called Shene until 1501.

Answer: True

Henry VII changed it because he and his father were Earls of Richmond (in Yorkshire) and that was one of his favourite manors.
4. Which district of Richmond Borough contains the National Physical Laboratory ?

Answer: Teddington

The National Physical Laboratory was built in 1902. Important scientific work by was carried out here in World War II by Barnes Wallis, famous for the bouncing bomb used in the 'dambuster' raids.
5. There are eight Royals Parks in London. How many of these are situated in Richmond Borough ?

The eight are: Regent's Park, Kensington Gardens, St James's Park, Green Park, Bushy Park, Richmond Park, Greenwich Park and Hyde Park. Richmond and Bushy Park respectively are the two largest. Bushy Park is immediately to the north of Hampton Court, and Richmond Park adjoins Wimbledon Common.
6. Which 18th century English poet had a grotto constructed at his villa in Twickenham ?

Answer: Alexander Pope

Much of the grotto survives today and lies beneath various 20th century buildings owned by St James Independent School for Boys.

Answer: J.M.W. Turner

Turner bought some land in Twickenham in 1807 and created a country residence there. He was concerned by the destruction of Pope's villa in 1808 and duly painted the event. Turner's painting "Pope's Villa at Twickenham" was sold at auction in 2008 for 5.4 million pounds (approx 8.6 million dollars).
