Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In September 1918, the All-Russian Provisional Government (also known as the Directorate) was established. It included the other party leaders except the Bolsheviks and was supposed to be an alternative governement to the Soviet one. The question is: where it was located?

Answer: Ufa

Nowadays the city population is over 1,100,000 people and it is the capital of Bashkortostan. The Provisional Governement resided there for a short time, since it was too near to the frontline.
2. In October 1918, the Directorate moved away from frontline and settled down in ________? (This city has often been considered as the capital of Russian Whites)

Answer: Omsk

Omsk is situated in Western Siberia. In the Civil War, very fierce battles for the control over that city took part. The Red Army, led by Tukhachevsky, was victorious and the Whites had to flee again.
3. On 18 November 1918 Alexander Kolchak was named as the Supreme Ruler of Russia by the ministers of the Provisional Governement. Earlier he had served as officer in Russian military. What was his rank?

Answer: Admiral

This rank was given to him in 1916, at the age of 42 for his service in Baltic Sea in WWI.
4. On 7 February 1920 Kolchak was shot by the Reds. Ironically it happened in the city where he had married 16 years before. What city?

Answer: Irkutsk

After the fall of Omsk, Irkutsk was meant to become the next capital of Whites. But when Kolchak finally reached it, power in the city was already in the hands of the Bolsheviks ...
5. In the history of Russian Civil War, a certain nation played very important part. They occupied Trans-Siberian railroad and seized the Russian gold reserve in Kazan. Some say, that also Kolchak was handed over to Bolsheviks by them. What nation was it?

Answer: Czechs

Also the Slovaks should be credited for that, but this army group is known by the name "Czech Legion". This group fought with Russian Army against the Germans. After Russia had pulled out of WWI, they were sent back home via Vladivostok (around the world).

It is believed that Germans were afraid that the Legion would start fighting against them, so they were interested in ensuring that the trip would take as long as possible. As the Germans were sent home directly, the Czechs were not too happy, especially when Bolsheviks tried to disarm them.
6. After the death of Kolchak, who became the next supreme leader of the White forces?

Answer: Denikin

Kolchak's troops were mainly in East, Denikin's in South. It was agreed beforehand that Denikin would replace Kolchak if something happened to him. He was the Supreme Leader only for 2-3 months and then retired, saying that he was too tired and he was disappointed with his army, like the army probably was disappointed with him, too.
7. Who was the man in charge in North-Western Russia? He led the North-Western Army Group and almost managed to capture Petrograd but only reached the suburbs.

Answer: Yudenich

Although talented in battlefield, his main problem was his arrogance: he tried to co-operate with Estonians, but was too blindly following the ideal of "Holy, undivisible Russia". He promised in public that independence would *not* be granted to the Baltic states. So the Estonian and Finnish troops ceased to supporting him. After failure, he went to France and died there 1933.
8. The last leader of Russian Whites was Wrangel. Where were his units finally annihilated?

Answer: Crimea

The Crimea was the last vestige of White powers. In November 1920 the Reds finally managed to invade it. Some of the troops were evacuated to a French military base in Tunisia, where they remained with their ships as the last Russian White Territory until 1924, when France officially recognised the USSR.
9. Even before the Bolsheviks seized power, one Russian general tried to forestall them to establish military dictatorship. His attempt in the summer of 1917 failed. Later he was one of the organisers of White Army and was for a short period also its commander-in-chief. What was his name?

Answer: Kornilov

Kornilov died in March 1918, attacking Ekaterinodar, where the Reds had 3 to 1 advantage in manpower. Attack succeeded.
10. That Russian White leader was a true patriot of Russia. It is told that although he never accepted the Soviet rule, he offered his services to his country when it was attacked by Hitler in 1941. Who was he?

Answer: Denikin

Denikin lived after Civil War in France, but died 1947 the in USA. He thought that fighting against Nazis was not fighting for Communism, but for Russia. However, his services were not used. Vlassov, by contrast, was imprisoned by Nazis and he formed an army group from Russians to fight against Soviet Union.
