Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. During WWII, what exactly was a 'fart sack'?

Answer: a bunk

During WWII a fart sack was a bunk, which is now more commonly known as a rack. I shall leave it to the imagination why it was called that.
2. During WWII, what was a 'swabbie'?

Answer: a sailor

During WWII, a swabbie was a US Navy sailor who used a swab - an instrument better known as a mop. It was more acceptable than the other names navymen were called.
3. During WWII, what did Marines call US soldiers?

Answer: doggies

During WWII, Marines would call US soldiers doggies. It was an insult, of course, because US soldiers refered to themselves as dogfaces.
4. During WWII,what was a 'fire watch'?

Answer: a sentry

During WWII, a fire watch was a sentry who stood guard over the barracks. Actually the term is pre-WWI; this duty was required because barracks had wood burning stoves that needed to be watched during the winter months.
5. During WWII, what was 'pot walloping'?

Answer: mess duty

During WWII, pot walloping was a stint in the galley or mess hall walloping pots. In other words, washing big, greasy, nasty pots. Terrible duty! No one looked forward to this detail.
6. During WWII, what was a 'sea bag'?

Answer: a duffle bag

During WWII, a sea bag was a large canvas duffle bag that US Marines carried their issue and personals in when going overseas. The term is still used.
7. During WWII, where did a US Marine find himself if he had VD?

Answer: the clap shack

During WWII, if you were unfortunate enough to have contracted VD, you were sent to a ward in the sick bay known as the clap shack. Treating VD was an unpleasant experience. Although the men were constantly lectured on the subject, some contracted VD.
8. During WWII, what did Marines call malaria?

Answer: the bug

Malaria was always refered to as the bug. Veterans of the Pacific will attest to how persistent malaria was.
9. During WWII, what did Marines call homemade liquor?

Answer: jungle juice

During WWII, homemade hooch was called jungle juice or just plain ole juice. The officers frowned upon the men making it but more than often let this offence pass.
10. During WWII,what did Marines call desertion?

Answer: going over the hill

During WWII, desertion was called going over the hill. During war time this was a very serious offense that could land you in prison when caught. Here is an interesting fact: When the 1st Marine Division embarked for Guadalcanal, it had less than a dozen deserters out of 19,000 men.

The majority of these men were six months out of boot camp with untried officers to lead them, yet they were willing to defend their country against an unbeaten enemy who had not seen defeat in the field. Semper Fi!
