Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which two countries were already at war when Germany invaded Poland?

Answer: Japan and China

Japan and China had been at war since 1937. Japan had invaded Manchuria (part of China) in 1931, and 1937 launched an all-out attack on China.
2. What was the first country that Hitler demanded after seizing Austria?

Answer: Czechoslovakia

The infamous Munich agreement was in 1938. This agreement handed over the Sudetenland to Hitler. In March, 1939 Hitler seized the rest of Bohemia and Moravia.
3. Which country lies directly to the north of Germany and was taken over by the Nazis?

Answer: Denmark

Denmark was invaded in April 1940 while the Germans were on their way to seize Norway.
4. Which country did Germany invade which brought Britain and France into the war?

Answer: Poland

Britain had a treaty with Poland, undertaking to come to the assistance of the latter if its independence was threatened by military force.
5. Which country's defeat had Hitler so excited that slapped his thigh with glee and danced a little jig?

Answer: France

At the outbreak of WWII France was widely regarded as the second most powerful military state in Europe, and its collapse within weeks in May-June 1940 was unexpected and shocking.

There are websites that claim that the jig was inserted into the newsreel by British propaganda to make Hitler comically undignified and childish. However, when reporting the French surrender live, William Shirer commented on the jig. A handful of Germans who watched the German newsreel in Germany in 1940 also commented on that little dance.
6. What was the battle called that saved Britain from the hands of Hitler?

Answer: Battle of Britain

This was an air battle between the German Luftwaffe and the Royal Air Force. It was Germany's first defeat in WWII.
7. Who was the Italian dictator at the time of the war?

Answer: Mussolini

Mussolini wanted Italy to return to the glory and power of the early Roman Empire.
8. Which country lay in the middle of Europe but remained neutral and basically untouched?

Answer: Switzerland

Switzerland was too mountainous for Germany to invade, and Hitler saw nothing of interest in it to take it over.
9. Which leader had proclaimed 'peace for our time' in 1938?

Answer: Chamberlain

Chamberlain's proclamation was disproven just a year later. It has become commonplace to quote this (inaccurately) as 'peace in our time'.
10. Who said 'Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few'?

Answer: Churchill

This famous quotation referred to the Battle of Britain.
11. Who was the American general that eventually won the presidency after the World War II?

Answer: Eisenhower

War heroes have often, but not always, become United States Presidents.
12. Which country did NOT fall under any Axis power?

Answer: Ireland

Ireland was neutral in WWII, as were also Portugal, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland. (Turkey was neutral till January 1945, when it declared war on Germany - a rather meaningless gesture at that stage in the war).
13. What was the codename of the operation for the plan to invade Britain?

Answer: Sea Lion

This operation was one the first defeats that the Germans tasted during World War II.
14. In which region of France was D-Day fought?

Answer: Normandy

This gave us the famous 'Normandy Landings'.
15. Who was the leader of the USSR during World War II?

Answer: Stalin

Stalin ruled with an iron fist.
