Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. If there is a problem on the space shuttle and the crew want to bail out they can do so by _____ ?

Answer: Jumping out the hatch and parachuting to Earth

While seemingly impossible to use, the crew are given parachutes. It is only possible to use them if the shuttle's engines are off and the the shuttle is in a controlled glide.
2. Can astronauts take their pets into space with them?

Answer: Only if doing experiments on them

"Experimental" animals only are taken onboard. If the crew has befriended them then that would qualify them as a pet I suppose.
3. Escape velocity for a spacecraft to fly to the moon is _______ ?

Answer: 25,000 miles per hour

25,000 miles per hour is the escape velocity regardless of the craft type.
4. How long will a spacesuit keep an astronaut alive?

Answer: 9 hours

An average sized astronaut will use the consumables of oxygen, absorbent, water and battery power within 9 hours.
5. What colour is space?

Answer: no colour

There are no particles to reflect light so it has no colour.
6. What shape does water form when floating in space on the shuttle?

Answer: sphere

All fluids form a perfect ball when floating around. Surface tension produces a sphere.
7. How does a candle burn in a weightless environment?

Answer: candle goes out as no convection

No convection means the flame goes out quickly, suffocated by its own exhaust.
8. Who flies the shuttle into orbit?

Answer: No one

No one, the shuttle flies itself. The computers are loaded with all the information it needs to autopilot.
9. How many times do your ears pop in a normal shuttle launch?

Answer: They don't

Your ears only pop in a plane because air is released as the plane climbs to its cruising altitude (or descends forlanding). The shuttle never releases air so there is no change in pressure, and your ears never pop.
10. On liftoff the crew of the space shuttle are subjected to ______ g of pressure.

Answer: 1.6

The g force rises to 1.6 g on liftoff and changes throughout flight, peaking to 3 g when fuel is nearly exhausted and the craft is lighter.
