Due to the large cost of transporting the shuttle from Edwards to Kennedy Space Center, the shuttle then used Kennedy Air Force Base in Florida instead. Changing from Edwards to KSC cut down the time the shuttle is exposed to the elements. Edwards was retained as a backup landing site.
