Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. According to legend, what was the translation of the Cherokee word "Chickamauga"?

Answer: "River of Death"

Although even some professional historians repeat the "River of Death" story as fact, the real origins of the word are still disputed.
2. Who commanded the Confederate Army of Tennessee at Chickamauga?

Answer: Braxton Bragg

Braxton Bragg was an intelligent and capable officer and a fine administrator, but his stern personality and quick temper made him unpopular with his subordinates.
3. Who commanded the Union Army of the Cumberland at Chickamauga?

Answer: William Rosecrans

William Rosecrans was a solid strategist and well-liked by his soldiers, but had a tendency to over-confidence that would spell ill for his army.
4. The Battle of Chickamauga was part of the larger campaign for control of what strategic southern city?

Answer: Chattanooga

At this time, Chattanooga had only 2,500 residents, but it sat at the center of four major rail lines, occupied a crucial point on the Tennessee River, and was a manufacturing hub, making it a prime target for both North and South.
5. The battle began when Union troops tangled with which famed Southern cavalryman at Jay's Mill?

Answer: Nathan Bedford Forrest

Called "The Wizard of the Saddle," Forrest was a self-made millionaire (making his fortune in the slave-trade) who rose from private to general in the Confederate Army. After the war, he was involved in the early Ku Klux Klan before eventually renouncing it.
6. Which Confederate general was "loaned" to the Army of Tennessee and arrived just in time for the battle's final day?

Answer: James Longstreet

Confederate President Jefferson Davis had wanted his premier commander, Robert E. Lee, to take charge of the armies west of the Appalachians, but Lee demurred. Instead, he sent his trusted corps commander Longstreet with two divisions to bolster Bragg. Their train journey from Virginia to Georgia was history's largest troop-transfer by rail up to that time.
7. Which Union officer personally supplied his brigade with the new Spencer Repeating Rifles?

Answer: John Wilder

Colonel Wilder was a forward-thinking soldier who saw the advantage the Spencer Rifles would offer his troops. The Spencer could fire seven shots before reloading, a far quicker rate-of-fire than the standard issue muzzle-loaders used by most soldiers.
8. What was the battle's result?

Answer: Confederate victory

After two-and-a-half days of hard fighting, the Confederates drove the Union troops from the field and into Chattanooga.
9. What Union general gained fame as "The Rock of Chickamauga" for his valiant stand in the battle's waning hours?

Answer: George Thomas

As the bulk of the Federals fled the battlefield, Thomas made a final stand on Snodgrass Hill, blocking the advancing Confederates and saving the Army of the Cumberland from complete destruction.
10. What did the Confederates gain by their victory?

Answer: Nothing

Despite their decisive victory, the Confederates were unable to capitalize. After a two-month siege of the Federals in Chattanooga, Bragg and his army were driven badly defeated in November of 1863 in the Battles of Lookout Mountain, Orchard Knob and Missionary Ridge. Chattanooga remained in Union hands through war's end and served as a launching-point for Sherman's March to the Sea.
