1. On what dates was the Battle of Gettysburg fought?

Answer: July 1, 2, 3 1863

This battle was not planned. The Union army was looking for the Confederate Army, who was known to be in the North. Lookouts spotted Confederate soldiers, and then the battle commenced. The battle resulted in around 50,000 casualties between the two armies before the battle ended.
2. When did the battle of Shiloh occur?

Answer: April 1862

This battle was also known as the Battle of Pittsburg Landing. This was a 2-day battle won by Union General Ulysses S. Grant.
3. When did the Battle of Antietam occur?

Answer: September 16-18, 1862

Also known as the Battle of Sharpsburg, this Union victory was courtesy of Union General George McClellan. September 17 was the bloodiest day in American History.
4. When did the Battle of Chancellorsville occur?

Answer: April 30-May 6, 1863

The Union Army under General Joseph Hooker was defeated by a smaller Confederate force led by Confederate General Robert E. Lee.
5. Fort Sumter was fought when?

Answer: April 12-13 1861

South Carolina seceeded from the Union following the election of Abraham Lincoln as President in November 1860. Upon taking office, Lincoln had a transmission from Major Robert Anderson who had moved from Fort Moultrie to the unfinished Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor requesting supplies.

He decided to send food staples but no weapons. Forces from South Carolina fired on the supply ships, starting the Civil War.
6. The first land battle of the Civil War occurred at the First Battle of Bull Run when?

Answer: July 21, 1861

Also known as the first Battle of Manassas by Confederate forces, Union forces under General Irvin McDowell attempted to march to Richmond from Washington D.C., and take the Confederate capital. Confederate forces under P.G.T. Beauregard caught them at Manassas Junction and soundly defeated them with the aid of Confederate forces under Joseph E. Johnston.
7. When was the Siege of Vicksburg?

Answer: May 18-July 4, 1863

The Army of the Tennessee lead by General Ulysses S. Grant crossed the Mississippi River and pushed the Confederate Army under Lt. General John C. Pemberton into Vicksburg. The Confederate Army held out until July 4, when the finally had to surrender because they were out of supplies and there were no re-enforcements.
8. When did the Battle of Fredericksburg occur?

Answer: December 11-15, 1862

The Confederate Army of Northern Virginia under Robert E. Lee defeated Union forces under Major General Ambrose Burnside. There were 19,233 casualties.
9. When did Union forces under William Tecumseh Sherman fight the battle of Atlanta ?

Answer: July 22, 1864

Sherman's Union forces overwhelmed Confederate forces under John B. Hood. Hood did not actually surrender the city of Atlanta until September 2, 1864. After taking Atlanta, Union forces headed toward the capital of Georgia, and on to Savannah with the March to the Sea.
10. When did the Civil War officially end at Appomattox Courthouse?

Answer: April 9, 1865

Robert E. Lee surrendered his Confederate forces to Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox Courthouse on April 9, 1865. Five days later President Abraham Lincoln was shot dead by John Wilkes Booth at Ford's Theatre while attending the play "Our American Cousin". He died the following morning, April 15, 1865.
