Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The pope who initiated the First Crusade was?

Answer: Urban II

Urban preached the crusade in response to an appeal for help from the Eastern Roman (Byzantine) Emperor. What the Emperor got was more than he bargained for.
2. Which of the following was NOT a crusader state in the Levant?

Answer: Damascus

Damascus was always held by Islamic forces and was a major thorn in the side of the Latin states.
3. What was the last Christian possession in the Levant to fall to Islamic forces?

Answer: Acre

Acre fell in 18th May, 1291. After that date, the Kingdom of Jerusalem was a mere title without any land.
4. What happened to Richard I (Lionheart) on his return from the crusade?

Answer: He was kidnapped

Richard was shipwrecked in the Adriatic, seized while passing through Austria and held for ransom by the Emperor Henry IV. His ransom was collected, despite the efforts of his brother John and King Phillip Augustus of France to prevent his release.
5. What of these cities was captured by the Fourth Crusade?

Answer: Constantinople

The Fourth Crusade is among Europe's darkest hours. In 1204 a crusade launched with the purpose of taking the Holy Land from the Muslims was instead diverted to Byzantium, the capital of the Eastern Roman Empire. While enjoying the hospitality of the latter, the "Crusaders" turned on their hosts, seized the city and set up their own "Latin" - that is, West European - state.

The Byzantine Emperor managed to continue to rule part of his empire from Nikea, and the "Latin" state of Constantinople was retaken by the Byzantines in 1261.
6. Which crusading order was abolished by the King of France?

Answer: The Knights Templar

Shrouded in mystery, the Templars were probably abolished for their huge wealth, which was founded on banking (providing letters of credit in Europe which could be redeemed by crusaders in the Holy Land).
7. Enrico Dandolo, the Venetian Doge who masterminded the Fourth Crusade was blind.

Answer: True

Not only blind, but well over eighty. Dandolo is said by chroniclers to have led the fighting, and his bravery was in one instance vital to the taking of Constantinople. Dandolo was the mastermind behind the enterprise, diverting the crusaders from Egypt to Byzantium (partly because Venice had just signed a lucrative trade agreement with the Caliph).
8. How did the crusading emperor Fredrick Barbarossa meet his end?

Answer: Drowned in a river

The aging Barbarossa either drowned, or died from the shock of the cold water.
9. What is notable about the King of Jerusalem, Baldwin IV?

Answer: He was a leper

The death of the leper king led to a rivalry between Raymond of Tripoli and Baldwin's brother-in-law, Guy de Lusignan.
10. Which of the following is NOT true of the Emperor (and King of Jerusalem) Frederick II during his crusade?

Answer: He was converted to the Eastern Orthodox church

Frederick bcame a legend in his own lifetime. He appears to have got on better with his enemies than with his own countrymen. Just before his departure, he was excommunicated by Gregory IX, he took Arab troops along (which he used in Europe more productively than in the Levant) and signed an agreement with the Turks, whereby Jerusalem was ceded to the West.

It was rumoured that he was one of those very rare medieval atheists, too.
