Answer: Thomas Jefferson

Everyone mentioned was on the committee that wrote it, but Thomas Jefferson was the main author.
2. When is generally regarded as the date of the American Declaration of Independence adopted by the Continental Congress?

Answer: July 4, 1776

On July 4 1776, the Continental Congress ratified the declaration of July 2 1776 declaring that the 13 Colonies no longer regarded themselves as under British rule.
3. Who resolved the resolution on independence?

Answer: Richard Henry Lee

John Adams tried to resolve independence, but no one would listen to him because he was disliked. He got Richard Henry Lee to propose it for him.
4. From which English philosopher did the Declaration committee get ideas for the Declaration?

Answer: John Locke

John Locke written of the 'natural right of man, which included 'life, liberty and property'. They changed this to 'life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.' The committee also wrote that to secure these rights governments are instituted among men, deriving their just power from the consent of the governed, and that whenever any form of government becomes destructive on these ends it is the right of the people to alter or abolish it.

These were all John Locke's ideas.
5. What rule was made about adopting the Declaration of Independence that made Patriots angry because it was unlikely to be adopted?

Answer: The vote had to be unanimous

John Dickinson proposed a unanimous vote knowing that if unanimity passed the Declaration wouldn't be used because Pennsylvania would vote no. It ended up in a tied vote so John Hancock voted in favor of unanimity. They had 6 nays to win over for it to be unanimous. South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia, Maryland, and New York were won over then they won over Pennsylvania so Dickerson left to fight for the colonies.

Answer: They abstained

When the declaration was being signed they voted yea, having previously abstained.
7. Who was the first person in Congress to sign it?

Answer: John Hancock

John Hancock said, "If we were to get executed for treason, my name is on the thing!"
8. Where were the meetings of the Second Continental Congress held during the writing of the Declaration?

Answer: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

They met in Baltimore from Dec.20,1776-March.4,1777.
They met in Lancaster at Sept.27,1776.
They met in York from Sept.30,1777-June.27,1778.
Philadelphia was from May.10,1775-Dec.12,1776. It was written in June 1776.
9. Why did Thomas Jefferson take out his paragraph on slavery?

Answer: He couldn't get the south's vote with it

Edward Rutledge and the rest of the southern delegates (except for Maryland and Virginia) wouldn't vote "yea" until it was removed.
10. Who were the youngest and oldest signers of the Declaration at that point in time?

Answer: Edward Rutledge & Ben Franklin

Edward Rutledge was 26, Ben Franklin was 70, John Adams was 41, Thomas Jefferson was 33, and Steven Hopkins was 69.
