1. What two rivers flank the Charleston peninsula?

The Land of Sandlappers, South Carolina!

Tremendously wealthy planters built mansions, churches and civic buildings. After the Civil War, 1861-1865, these fortunes fell away. The phrase "too poor to paint and too proud to whitewash" was coined and is still used today. However, this same poverty made it impossible to afford new construction and leading to retention of the city's 18th century architecture for which it is famous today.
