Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. You are aboard the USS Hornet for the Doolittle Raid when the General Quarters Alarm goes off. A PT Boat has spotted the Hornet and USS Nashville has sunk it. Your cover is blown what do you do?

Answer: Launch Now! and try to make it to Japan despite being 600 miles from your target

If you are a historian like me you would launch now. The Hornet is a sitting duck with those B-25s on her deck. Jimmy Doolittle then gave the launch order and all 16 planes took off, never to return.
2. You made it to Tokyo but you are under attack. Your plane has been hit and Zekes are on your tail. What do you do?

Answer: Keep flying

I would keep flying, Jimmy Doolittle kept going despite being attacked by Japanese guns and Zekes which were firing at his aircraft. One of the aircraft did dump its bombs when attacked, and the Whirling Devilish succeed in shooting down a Zeke with its guns.
3. You completed the mission but you are now out of gas and need a place to land. Where should you go?

Answer: Head for Russia though it means being interned

This is a tough one. Your only chance of survival is to head to Russia. Sergeant York and his crew headed for Russia but the B25 was captured and copied. The rest of the group headed to China, 12 of them crashed, and three ditched in the ocean. Doolittle landed in a pile of elephant dung and had to hike the rest of the way to Kunming and General Chennault's headquarters.
4. The crew of the Green Hornet have been captured by the Japanese. What is their fate?

Answer: Four rescued, one dead, and three shot

Once the Green Hornet landed the eight man crew swam towards the monastery in Wenzhou. Hours after landing the Japanese attacked the monastery and captured the men. All of them were tried in a show trial in Tokyo and sentenced to death. Hirohito later pardoned four of the men and their sentences were commuted.

The other four - Hallmark, Farrow, Spatz, and Mender - were sentenced to death. Mender died during a prison transfer during his trial, and Hallmark, Farrow, and Spatz were given a Mexican style firing squad by the Japanese. Nielsen, Barr, Hite, and De Shazer remained in a POW camp for three years before being rescued in 1945.
5. What happened to the raiders when they got home?

Answer: Given the Medal of Honor and the Distinguished Flying Cross

When the pilots got home FDR awarded them the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Medal of Honor, the POW Medal, and the Purple Heart. Although the Doolittle Raid was a failure it boosted morale for the United States which had just entered the war.
6. Now try to things from Japan's point of view. Because the Doolittle raid failed what was their target?

Answer: Midway

Yamamoto's target was Midway. Guadalcanal did not happen until 1943, Dutch Harbor was a false raid, and The Japanese already have Guam.
7. Which base did the Doolittle Raiders operate out of when they were deployed for the attack?

Answer: Pendleton Field

When the raid happened the 17th Bomber Group was stationed at Pendleton for training before transferring to Columbia where they did landing training for landing on the deck of the Hornet and practicing takeoffs. After the raid they transferred to Barksdale Air Force Base in preparation for the invasion of North Africa. Today Pendleton Air Force Base is the Eastern Oregon Regional Airport and houses the Oregon Army National Guard.
8. Although no B-25s from the raid survive, how many replicas are on display in museums?

Answer: 3

There are three. One is on display at Wright Air Force Base in Dayton Ohio, One is on display at the US Armament Museum at Eglin Air Force Base, and the last one is at Pearl.
9. After the mission all of the raiders were given a goblet by the Sterling company. How were they positioned in the case in 2018?

Answer: One face up, 79 face down

The current status of the goblets is all are face down except for Cole's. When he passes on his goblet will be turned upside down and the case and the empty whisky bottle will be donated to the National Air and Space Museum. The goblets are currently on display in the trophy case at Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs.
10. Which now retired carrier was used in the reenactment and in the movie "Pearl Harbor"?

Answer: Ranger

The ship used was Ranger. Ranger was scrapped in 2015 when a request for donation was denied. Before it was Ranger was used to film Pearl Harbor with footage from the reenactment used in the film. Ranger also stood in for the Enterprise in Star Trek IV.
