Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. According to Suetonius the young Caligula was suspected of terrorising his father Germanicus to death. Which of the following scare tactics did he NOT employ?

Answer: Dead bodies of crows scattered about the bedroom.

Suetonius tells us that shortly before he died Germanicus found first the gruesome objects (a dead cat with wings, dead babies, etc) then began to see his name shortened each day by a letter in rooms to which only family members had access, spookily it was on the day that only a single G apeared that he died but the one that for some reason scares me the most is the number 17 which Germanicus was terrified of due to his failure to save the 17th legion in earlier campaigns.

Whether you believe what Suetonius wrote or not is up to you.
2. Caligula is particularly remembered for saying "If only all of Rome had one ________"?

Answer: neck

He had a bit of a preoccupation with necks.
3. Gaius's youngest sister Drusilla was the first and only woman to be deified in Ancient Rome.

Answer: False

Though Drusilla was the first woman to be deified their great grandmother Livia was later made a goddess by their uncle Claudius.
4. Which of the following has not been suggested as a manner in which Drusilla died?

Answer: Poisoning

The movie "Caligula" suggests she died of the fever. Most claim Caligula disembowled her because she was pregnant and he thought he was Zeus and she was Hera and their son was more powerful than Zeus, and Gaius couldn't have that. It has honestly been suggested that she died after a 24 hour non-stop orgy but I can't remember where that was off the top of my head!
5. Agripinella, mother of Nero was what relation to Gaius?

Answer: sister

Nero was the last of the Julio- Claudians two emperors after Gaius.
6. Upon Drusilla's death which of the following was NOT made illegal?

Answer: kissing

If anyone laughed, washed, had sex or ate with their family in the six months following Drusilla's death it was punishable by death.
7. What was the name of the goddess Drusilla became?

Answer: Panthea

Pallas was the woman whose name became attached to Athene's. Persephone was the daughter of Ceres and Aradia's just someone I keep hearing mentioned on Buffy! Drusilla became Panthea meaning all the gods and goddesses.
8. What was the name of the wife with whom Gaius had his daughter Drusilla the younger?

Answer: Cesonia

Livilla was his aunt who conspired with Sejanus against Tiberius. There were plenty of Julias the most famous being Augustus's daughter and he never was allowed to marry his sister. Both Cesonia and little Drusilla were killed when he was.
9. Which set of gods and goddesses did Gaius and Drusilla believe in?

Answer: Egyptian

He liked the whole marrying-your-sister 'thing' and built an Egyptian temple in the middle of Rome just to annoy the senate.
10. What did Gaius bring back to Rome as "proof" that he had conquered Britain?

Answer: seashells

He gathered them off the beach in France, the other options are just silly but then so were the seashells!
