Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The FAL was produced by the Fabrique Nationale de Herstal (FN) in Belgium. Who designed it?

Answer: Dieudonne Saive

Eugene Stoner designed the M16 or "Little Black Rifle" as it is otherwise known. Rudolf Amsler designed the Sturmgewehr 57, and Iwashita designed the Howa Type 64 Rifle.
2. In what year was the first FAL prototype completed and in what caliber was it chambered?

Answer: 1947 & 7.62x33 Kurz

Although the 7.62x51 NATO was the eventual caliber selected, the initial prototype was chambered for the 7.62x33 Kurz round pioneered by the Germans during WWII for use in the StG44 assault rifle. The round was considered to offer an excellent compromise in terms of low-recoil and stopping power at typical combat ranges.
3. FAL stands for 'Fusil Automatique Léger' meaning what in English?

Answer: Light Automatic Rifle

Loaded with a 20 round magazine, the FAL tipped the scales at just over 11lbs.
4. The 7.62x51 NATO round is the same as which of the following?

Answer: .308 Winchester

With a muzzle velocity of 2700fps and an effective range of 500m, the FAL, unlike the Russian AK-47, utilized a heavier full-power rifle cartridge.
5. It is estimated that FAL production (in all its variants) has exceeded how many weapons?

Answer: 1 million

The FAL's nemesis, the AK-47 on the other hand, numbers in the region of 75 million weapons in circulation!
6. The FAL has been adopted some by 24 countries. Which of the following countries did NOT adopt the FAL?

Answer: France

The Irish Defence Forces used it as the main rifle from the 1960s till 1988 where it was replaced by the Steyr AUG for use by Permanent Defence Forces. However, it was not until 2000/2001 that the FN FAL was retired by the Reserve Forces. Cambodia surprisingly also used the FAL during the Cambodian Civil War.

It was also used by the Royal Cambodian Army. In Portuguese service, the FN FAL was designated Espingarda Automática 7,62 mm FN m/962.
7. What was the designation of the FAL adopted for use by the UK?

Answer: L1A1

The L96A1 is an Accuracy International-produced sniper rifle and currently the sniper rifle of choice for the British Army. The SA80A2 is the current infantry rifle - a "bullpup" configuration chambered in 5.56mm. The GPMG aka "Jimpy" is a belt fed machine gun.
8. Which of the following was not one of the changes made to the metric pattern FAL when adopted by the UK as the SLR?

Answer: A stronger folding bipod

Metric magazines will fit and function in inch pattern rifles but inch pattern magazines will not fit metric weapons.
9. The US tested the FAL as an official competitor for the new US Light Self-Loading Rifle intended to replace the M1 Garand.

Answer: True

Designated the T48, it competed against the T44 rifle. The T44 was a heavily modified version of the earlier M1 Garand. Testing proved the T48 and the T44 comparable in performance, with no clear winner. However, the supposed ease of production of the T44 upon machinery already in place for the M1 Garand and the similarity in the manual of arms for the T44 and M1 ultimately swayed the decision in the direction of the T44, which was adopted as the M14 rifle.
10. The gas system is fitted with a gas regulator behind the front sight base, allowing adjustment of the gas system in response to environmental conditions, and can be closed completely to allow for the firing of rifle grenades

Answer: True

The gas system can also be adjusted to compensate for different ammunition loads.
