Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Ancient Egypt went through many phases and many different dynasties, including rule by the Persians and Macedonians. However, it all ended when it was conquered in 30 B.C. by which Empire?

Answer: The Roman Empire

Octavian, later Emperor Augustus, was involved in a civil war with Mark Anthony. Making a huge mistake, Mark Anthony fled to Ancient Egypt and married Queen Cleopatra. Octavian used this opportunity to brand Mark Anthony as a traitor, and, with the support of the people, marched on Egypt and conquered it for the Roman Empire.
2. The Neo-Assyrian Empire once experienced prosperity. However, it fell in 605 B.C. to what empire?

Answer: The New Babylonian Empire

The Assyrians, at the peak of their power, were one of the largest empires of their time. However, after the death of the good emperor Ashurbanipal, civil wars split the empire, after which it was taken over by the New Babylonians for a short period of time after which the Babylonian Empire itself fell.
3. The Macedonian Empire existed as a small Greek kingdom before the conquests of Alexander the Great made it one of the largest empires of the world to ever exist. However, overexpansion took its toll, and Macedonia was conquered by which Empire?

Answer: The Roman Empire

The Macedonian Empire reached its peak under Alexander the Great. However, after his death, future rulers made the mistake of quarreling amongst themselves about who was to be Alexander's heir and later of fighting against Rome. The Romans, as victors, took over Macedonia and made it into a province.
4. The Qin Dynasty, the first imperial dynasty of China, was succeeded by which dynasty?

Answer: The Han Dynasty

The Qin Dynasty, a short lived dynasty, lasted from 221-206 B.C. A peasants' revolt removed the second emperor from power, Qin Er Shi. A short period of confusion, called the Eighteen States, occurred before stability returned with the Han Dynasty.
5. In 476 A.D., Romulus Augustus was ousted from power. He is traditionally regarded as last emperor of which empire?

Answer: The Roman Empire

Romulus Augustus was the last emperor of the declining Roman Empire. Before that the Empire had been split (definitively by Theodosius I in AD 395) into the western Roman Empire and the eastern Byzantine Empire. Rome was overrun by barbarian tribes which installed Odoacer as king of Italy.

He reigned from 476-493, when he was murdered by Theoderic, who reigned as the last king of Italy till 1861(!).
6. This empire was captured by the Ottoman Turks in 1453 A.D. when Constantinople was conquered. What empire was this?

Answer: The Byzantine Empire

The Byzantine Empire was formed when the Roman Empire was divided into two parts. The Byzantine Empire was less prone to attacks by barbarian tribes, and so remained in existence for almost a thousand years after the fall of the Western Roman Empire. It was severely weaked by the extention of Arab rule and, in 1204, by the Fourth Crusade.

By the time of its fall, it had been reduced to just a small area in and around Constantinople and some small areas of Greece.
7. The Mongol Empire is considered to have fallen finally when the Yuan Dynasty fell. Thus, the Mongol Empire fell in which year?

Answer: 1368

The Yuan Dynasty was one of the few foreign Dynasties to have control over China. The Mongols who ruled the Yuan Dynasty fell to the Ming Dynasty in 1368, ending the huge Mongol Empire.
8. The Mughal Empire was a successful empire, controlling much of India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Tajikistan, extending in time into the European colonial era. Unfortunately, they were weakened by the Marathas and lost control of all territories but Delhi after 1740. However, picking the wrong side in a war later led to the complete downfall of even the shadowy remnant of their empire. To which war am I referring to?

Answer: Indian Rebellion of 1857

In the Indian Rebellion of 1857, a mutiny started among troops because of rumors that cartridges in the army contained cow and pig fat, which were taboo to Hindus and Muslims, respectively. Bahadur Shah II, the last Mughal Emperor, supported the rebels. After the defeat of the rebels, Bahadur Shah II was sent to exile in Myanmar, ending the Mughal Empire.
9. The Ottoman Empire existed for more than 600 years, from 1299 to 1922. Picking the wrong side in a war cost them dearly; and led to the end of its existence. Which war am I referring to?

In World War I, the Ottoman Turks sided with the Central Powers. When they lost in World War I, the victors divided up the Turks' territory, leaving a small territory to make an independent country, Turkey.
10. The First French Empire experienced a golden age for a short period. However, its leader, Napoleon, lost what battle and was sent into exile for the second time?

Answer: The Battle of Waterloo

After being sent into exile for the first time in Elba, Napoleon escaped, got the loyalty of his army, and resumed war. However, he was decisively beaten at Waterloo and sent to exile in Saint Helena, where he spent the rest of his life.
