Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The United States was formed by 13 colonies. In 1776, these colonies declared their independence from Great Britain. Who was King of Great Britain at the time?

Answer: George III

One of the reasons the colonies declared independence was that they were getting taxed unfairly. George III didn't give the colonists a say in their own taxes. They were being forced to pay taxes and the colonists didn't like that. The outraged colonists then protested by chanting the now famous phrase, "No taxation without representation!".
2. How many Australians fought in the Vietnam War?

Answer: 60,000

Because of concerns over the spread of Communism in Southeast Asia, a small contingent of 30 men were sent there in 1962. It eventually turned out to be the longest and most controversial war that Australia has ever fought. It involved conscription, but even at the youthful age of twenty, the Australians already had special guerrilla warfare training. Australians were largely given their own theatres of warfare because of this training. Australian withdrawal began in 1970 and was completed in 1973, although forces were briefly sent there in 1975 to evacuate personnel from the Saigon embassy and also to bring out as many South Vietnamese as possible.

Eventually about 60,000 Aussies had taken part, over 500 were killed and over 3,000 were wounded.
3. In 1925, the deadliest tornado in U.S. history killed 695 people. In which three states did it cause destruction?

Answer: Missouri, Illinois, Indiana

On March 18, 1925, the Tri-State Tornado first touched down in Missouri before it crossed through Illinois on the way to Indiana. Two hundred miles and four hours later, a mile-wide path of wreckage took 695 lives, left 2,000 injured and leveled 15,000 homes. Four towns were destroyed and six others were 50% destroyed.

The tornado set records for ground speed (62 mph) and length of path (219 miles).
4. The current United States flag, represented by 13 stripes and 50 stars, was adopted in what year?

Answer: 1960

In 1818, it was suggested that a new star be added to the flag, representing every new admitted state to the Union and the 13 stripes would represent the original 13 colonies. The current flag gained its 50th star in 1960, with the admission of Hawaii in 1959.
5. What was the largest cavalry battle ever fought in North America?

Answer: Battle of Brandy Station

The Battle of Brandy Station, in Virginia, took place on June 9th, 1863. It was fought between Union and Confederate troops on route to Gettysburg. Over 20,000 troops, including 17,000 cavalry were engaged in battle. The Union troops were finally driven off but the Confederate cavalry would never again be the dominating force it had been. One of the high ranking officers taking part in The Battle of Brandy Station was George Armstrong Custer.

He also fought at East Cavalry Field, Gettysburg, The Battle of Appomattox Court House, and The Battle of Little Big Horn, where he had his famous "last stand".
6. The longest fence in the world was erected in Australia in the 1880s. It ran between Jimbour in Queensland and the Eyre Peninsula in South Australia. The fence was erected to keep out what pest?

Answer: Dingoes

The Dingo Fence or Dog Fence stretched 5,614 kilometres (3,488 miles) and was erected to protect sheep flocks and to keep dingoes out of the fertile south- eastern parts of Australia.
7. What state has the only royal palace in the United States?

Answer: Hawaii

The Iolani Palace is located in Honolulu, Hawaii. Barack Obama, the first African-American President of the United States, was born in Honolulu. While California and New York may have lots of superstars, there are no royal palaces in those states. (But they do have some big houses).
8. In what year was the FIFA World Cup in South Africa?

Answer: 2010

Spain ended up winning it all, beating the Netherlands. Shakira's "Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)" was one of the World Cup's theme songs.
9. What was Zambia called before it got its independence?

Answer: Northern Rhodesia

When it was a colony of the UK, it was called Northern Rhodesia from 1911-1964. Then, it got its independence, and it became modern-day Zambia.
10. A large number of Irish people immigrated to the United States during the 1840s due to the "Great Famine" which affected over one third of the population who grew this crop. Which vegetable was this?

Answer: Potato

During the years 1845-1852, there was mass starvation and immigration from Ireland as many of them were dependent on potatoes. The population of Ireland fell by nearly 25% after the "Great Potato Famine". Some of the 25% immigrated to the USA.
