Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Nazis persecuted many other groups besides the Jews. Which of the following were NOT persecuted?

Answer: British

Mentally and physically handicapped people were killed, as well as Jehovah's Witnesses. Artists, writers, scholars and scientists were persecuted if their work even hinted at anything that the Nazis didn't like.
2. Where was the largest women's concentration camp?

Answer: Ravensbrueck

Ravensbrueck was opened by the Nazis in May 1939. When it was liberated in 1945, over 100,000 women had passed through it. The inmates of Ravensbrueck were the first to be moved to Auschwitz.
3. What was the Jewish council in the ghettos called?

Answer: Judenrat

The council chairman often had to choose which people were to be transferred from the ghettos to the concentration camps.
4. Which country led the biggest rescue of its Jews?

Answer: Denmark

When the authorities in Denmark found out that their Jews were to be deported, they notified the Danish resistance. They were able to take 7,200 of their 7,800 Jews to neutral Sweden.
5. Which was the first major concentration camp or extermination camp to be liberated?

Answer: Majdanek

Majdanek was liberated by the Soviets in July, 1944. Auschwitz was liberated by the Soviets, too, Belsen by the British and Buchenwald by the US and the prisoners themselves.
6. Which of these camps did the Americans *not* liberate?

Answer: Auschwitz

American forces liberated Buchenwald on April 11, 1945. They liberated more than 20,000 prisoners.
7. What was the first extermination camp?

Answer: Chelmno

Jews were first murdered with gas in enclosed vans before fixed gas chambers were created.
8. What year did the routine, large-scale and systematic extermination of the Jews begin?

Answer: 1941

Some older history books misleadingly give the Wannsee Conference (20 January 1942) as the start of the "Final Solution". However, the systematic rounding up and murder of Jews by mobile killing units (Einsatzgruppen) had begun in late June 1941 as these units began to operate behind German lines in Operation Barbarossa.

The Wannsee Conference was concerned with the administration of the "Final Solution".
9. What was the largest ghetto?

Answer: Warsaw

The Warsaw Ghetto housed 450,000 Jews in a space that took up less than one square mile.
10. The United States government (and other Allied governments) knew about the killing of Jews during WWII.

Answer: True

The US and Britain knew about the uprising in the Warsaw Ghetto, about the gas chambers at Auschwitz and the killing of other innocent victims. They excused themselves from not doing anything by claiming that it wasn't practical to give help.
