Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which was the largest concentration camp in Europe?

Answer: Auschwitz-Birkenau

Auschwitz was established in May, 1940 and was divided into three major camps and at one time had a further 45 sub-camps. The three main camps were liberated by Soviet troops on 27 January 1945.
2. On August 2, 1943, a planned rebellion occured in which several guards and one SS officer were killed. Over 200 inmates escaped. Which death camp did this rebellion take place in?

Answer: Treblinka

Most of the inmates who escaped were either recaptured or shot.
3. What was the first official permanent concentration camp which opened in 1933?

Answer: Dachau

Dachau opened officially in Germany on Wednesday, March 22, 1933 and ultimately had a further 133 subcamps. It was originally planned to house political prisoners and could accommodate 5,000 inmates.
4. In 1941, the Nazis began the practice of tattooing their prisoners. Where did they originally place the tattoos?

Answer: On the left breast

They later moved the tattoos to the inner forearm. Contrary to a widespread assumption, tattooing was only done at the Auschwitz group of camps.
5. Which concentration camp housed the largest number of women?

Answer: Ravensbrueck

Ravensbrueck was located in Germany. Many brutal experiments were performed on the women there.
6. How many major Nazi extermination camps (death camps) were there?

Answer: 6

These mass murder camps were: Auschwitz II (part only), Belzec, Chelmno, Majdanek (part only), Sobibor and Treblinka. The sole purpose of Belzec, Chelmno, Sobibor and Treblinka was extermination. Auschwitz II and Majdanek combined the functions of 'ordinary' but extremely harsh concentration camps with those of extermination camps. In addition, there were two other little known extermination camps in Belarus: Maly Trostinets (near Minsk) and , near Brest. There are no known survivors of these last two camps, and this may be one of the reasons why they are virtually unknown. (Bronnaya Gora doesn't even get a mention in the English-language Wikipedia, accessed 1 November 2010, despite the fact that an estimated 50,000 people were killed there).

There was also the Croatian camp at Jasenovac. (Croatia carried out its own national holocaust).
7. Which country's Jews sustained the greatest number of losses?

Answer: Poland

It is estimated that about 3,000,000 Polish Jews were murdered by the Nazis.
8. Zyklon B was one of the substances used in the gas chambers. What poison did it contain?

Answer: cyanide

Zyklon B gas was a colourless gas with a bitter almond smell. People being gassed suffered terrible fear, dizziness and vomiting before dying.
9. Which of these was a 'transit camp'?

Answer: Westerbork

Westerbork was a stop-over for prisoners before being shipped off to other camps usually in Germany or Poland. Westerbork was located in Holland. Bergen-Belsen changed function a number of times between 1940 and 1945, and at one time was a special camp for people with diseases.
10. Prisoners of concentration camps had their own jargon. What was a 'Kapo' to an inmate?

Answer: A fellow inmate in charge of a work team

These Kapos were hated: they were, after all, collaborators and they were usually cruel and sadistic and would do anything to retain their position.
