The US 5th Naval Fleet, 5th Amphibious Corps, 7th Air Force, 3rd, 4th and 5th Marine Divisions and the 147th Infantry Regiment took part in the invasion to take Iwo Jima.
2. What was the famous mountain on Iwo Jima where one of the most famous photographs of World War 2 was taken?

Answer: Mount Suribachi

Mount Suribachi is located on the South-West of Iwo Jima. Japanese defenders who were well dug in on Mount Suribachi killed many American Marines in the beach landings.
3. Before the landings, there were air bombings followed by naval bombardments. Did these have a big impact on the Japanese defenders?

Answer: No

The bombardments had almost no effect because the Japanese were well dug in and were quite safe. All the bombs and shells probably only made a few soldiers shell-shocked. Some of those who positioned on the beaches in much weaker pillboxes and trenches/ bunkers were annihilated.

Answer: Arkansas, New York, Texas, Nevada, Idaho and Tennessee

These were the battleships that were bombarding Iwo Jima. The Tennessee and Nevada were both veterans of Pearl Harbor.

Answer: Iggy

Ralph Anthony "Iggy" Ignatowski was born on April 8 1926 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He was with the 3rd Platoon, E company, 2nd battalion, 28th marine Regiment, 5th marine division. He was a close friend of one of the company's medics, John 'Doc' Bradley. During the battle, he was captured and bayoneted to death by Japanese soldiers.

He is buried at the Rock Island National Cemetery in Illinois.

Answer: 62,000 men

The Americans had 62,000 casualties, including 6,800 dead. Also 2 US marines were captured by the Japanese, none of them survived the battle. The entire campaign lasted around 35 days.

Answer: USS Bismark Sea

USS Bismark Sea was also the last US carrier lost in World War 2. It was sunk by a kamikaze strike.
