Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which was NOT a "tank destroyer"?

Answer: M26 Pershing

The M26 Pershing was actually an American heavy tank that saw service in WWII and Korea. It saw very little action in WWII because it only arrived on European battlefields in early 1945.
2. Which of the following was an armoured car?

Answer: M8 Greyhound

The M8 Greyhound is the only armoured car. The M22 Locust was a light tank. It was light enough to be dropped out of a plane and only served with the British forces. The M4 Sherman was the main American tank used in WWII with many variants. The P-38 is actually an American plane, not a tank.
3. The "T34 Calliope" was mounted on which vehicle, and what was it?

Answer: M4 Sherman, rocket launcher

The "T34 Calliope" was rocket launcher which could be mounted on a Sherman tank. It could hold 60 rockets and was built in very small numbers.
4. What does the letter "L" stand for in the acronym "LVT"?

Answer: Landing

LVT actually stands for Landing Vehicle Tracked. It was a series of landing vehicles designed specifically to transport troops from water to land during amphibious operations.
5. Which of the following was an American made halftrack?

Answer: M3 Halftrack

SdKfz 251 was the most common German halftrack, AB 41(Autoblinda 41) was an Italian armoured car, the Universal Carrier often referred to as Bren Carrier was a British tracked vehicle used to carry troops and equipment.
6. What was the designation of the M24 Chaffee?

Answer: Light Tank M24

In British service it was called Chaffee after an American General who served during WWII, Adna R. Chaffee, Jr. He is a less known General who saw the future that the tank would have in future wars. In this respect he could be compared to Heinz Guderian.
7. What was America's first heavy tank to see combat in WWII?

Answer: M26 Pershing

It was also one of the first American tanks to be officially named after a General by the Americans. The official designation was "Heavy Tank M26 Pershing". It first saw service in Europe in February of 1945. The Sherman was a medium tank, the Tiger was a German heavy tank, and the M36 Jackson was a tank destroyer.
8. What was so revolutionary about the Sherman tank?

Answer: First tank to introduce wet storage

Some versions of the Sherman tank were equipped with "wet storage". This was used to keep the ammunition from exploding if the turret was penetrated. This greatly increased the survival rate of the crew. These tanks can be easily identified on paper by having a 'W' at the end of the designation.
9. In the Pacific what was the tactic used by tanks when engaging enemy infantry in close quarters in the jungle?

Answer: Spray each other with machine-gun fire

You may wonder why this was actually the tactic used. It was simply because the Japanese would run with explosives at the tanks in the hope of exploding them. This is an effective strategy but causes useless casualties and the American tactic used to counter it worked quite well.
10. What was special about the Sherman Rhino?

Answer: It was the hedge-cutting version

It was a field modification that was used shortly after the initial invasion of Normandy. It was used to cut though hedges in France. Otherwise the 'humps' created by hedgerows in Normandy often tilted tanks upwards, which exposed the vulnerable underside.
