1. In 1805, the United States of America defeated the Barbary States in the First Barbary War. Which of these states was NOT one of the Barbary States?

Answer: Egypt

The First Barbary War was fought and won by the US against the North African States of Morocco, Tunis, Tripolitania and Algiers. By winning the war, the US was assured of safe naval commercial passage through the Mediterranean. Unfortunately, piracy of naval vessels continued until another decisive American victory in the Second Barbary War (1816).
2. This South Vietnamese general was the president of South Vietnam who resigned shortly before the surrender to North Vietnam in 1975.

Answer: Nguyen Van Thieu

Nguyen Van Thieu served as president of South Vietnam from 1967 till just before the fall of Saigon in 1975. Before fleeing to Taiwan he handed power to Tran Van Hyong, the vice president. He died in the US in 2001.
3. In 1844, the Dominican Republic became a sovereign nation after defeating this country in its war of independence. What was the name of this occupying country?

Answer: Haiti

On February 27, 1844 Juan Pablo Duarte and his group "Los Trinitarios" declared independence from Haiti.
