1. Winfield Scott Hancock ran for President. Who did he lose to?

Answer: James Garfield

Hancock was unable to translate his wartime heroics into political victory, and he lost a close election in 1880 to James Garfield.
2. What President restored the citizenship of Jefferson Davis?

Answer: Jimmy Carter

President Davis lived out his remaining years in Mississippi never seeking restoration of his citizenship.
3. At the battle of Gettysburg, a Maryland regiment had a dog as a mascot which was out ahead of the troops during the attack on Culp's Hill. What regiment was it?

Answer: 1st Maryland

During the attack by CSA forces the dog ran ahead of the troops and was killed along with 31 men of the regiment. I know the last time I was at Gettysburg there is a statue with a dog on it.
4. Another Gettysburg question. Anybody who has been to Gettysburg battle and gone to the Cyclorama has seen the picture of Gen. Pickett's charge on 3 July. Who painted it?

Answer: Paul Philippoteaux

In 1883 he re-created Pickett's charge in a mammoth painting that was originally 400 feet in circumference and 50 feet high. In later years he revised it (after talking to veterans) in an effort to portray the charge as accurately as possible - except that he painted himself in the picture as a Union officer leaning on a tree with a drawn saber.

He surrendered 17,000 troops under terms similar to those offered to Gen. Lee. Jo Shelby refused to surrender and headed to Mexico.

Answer: 43rd Battalion, 1st Virginia Cavalry

He disbanded his men at Millwood, Va. when he heard the news that Gen. Lee had surrendered. He was not pardoned until 1866.
