Private Barton Mitchell of the 27th Indiana, was said to have found an envelope containing three cigars wrapped in a piece of paper. The piece of paper turned out to be Gen. Robert E. Lee's Special Orders 191- which detailed the detachments and orders of march for the Army of Northern Virginia. Acting on this information, McClellan was able to make a concentrated attack on Lee's scattered army that culminated in the Battle of Antietam.

This battle ended Lee's first invasion of the North and went a long way to sealing the fate of the Southern cause.
