This is the date that President Franklin D Roosevelt said "will live in infamy". The result of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour was the that the USA joined the war on the Allied side and, the best part of four years later, emerged victorious.
2. The Battle of Waterloo

Answer: June 18, 1815

Napoleon Bonaparte's final defeat and a victory that established the Duke of Wellington as a British national hero for the rest of time. He would eventually serve two terms as Prime Minister.
3. Hendrix closes the Woodstock Festival.

Answer: August 18, 1969

Paid double that of any other artist at the festival, Hendrix closed the 3-night/4-day festival with a double, 2-hour set starting at 9am on Monday morning.
4. The Suez Canal opens

Answer: November 17, 1869

Linking the Mediterranean to the Red Sea and providing Europe's primary seafaring trading nations with a much faster route to their markets in southern Asia and Oceania. Prior to the opening of the canal, ships had to travel far to the south and around the Cape of Good Hope in southern Africa.

The most famous shootout in the history of the American Wild West lasted just 30 seconds. The place was Tombstone in Arizona Territory and the protagonists were the outlaws Billy Claiborne, Ike & Billy Clanton, Tom & Frank McLaury on one side and lawmen Virgil, Morgan & Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday on the other.
6. The Tiananmen Square Massacre

Answer: June 4, 1989

Seven weeks of protests end with around 300 dead and thousands injured. The square, whose name means "Gate of Heavenly Peace", is located in the centre of the Chinese capital, Beijing. One of the world's largest city squares, it covers an area of 109 acres (or about 100 American football fields).

The prison contained just seven inmates when it was stormed but the date is still commemorated annually as France's national day.
8. Captain Cook lands at Botany Bay

Answer: April 29, 1770

Cook's landing marked the beginning of British interest in Australia. Today the bay serves as the main cargo seaport for the city of Sydney.
9. The Boston Tea Party

Answer: December 16, 1773

The protest of dumping tea into Boston Harbour eventually escalated into the American Revolutionary War.
10. Discovery begins the California Gold Rush

Answer: January 24, 1848

Gold was first discovered Sutter's Mill in the township of Coloma, 35 north of Sacramento. As word of the discovery spread, so more than a quarter of a million gold-seekers (known as 49ers), including tens of thousands from outside North America, descended on the region. The Gold Rush lasted until the middle of the 1850s.
