Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Name the Israeli nuclear technician who leaked the status of Israel's nuclear weapons program in 1986. He spent eighteen years in prison.

Answer: Mordachai Vanunu

Vanunu took photographs documenting Israeli weapons development. After his release, he was re-arrested for violating the conditions of his parole, most notably speaking to the press.
2. In 1989 Myron Mehlman warned the energy company that he worked for that the gasoline being sold in Japan contained dangerous amounts of benzene. Which company immediately fired him?

Answer: Mobil

Mehlman is a renowned toxicologist with a Ph.D. from M.I.T. Mobil appointed him to the National Academy of Sciences where he represented the energy company's interests (until he spoke out on benzene).

Mehlman sued Mobil, won, and was awarded $7 million.
3. Gary Webb documented the importation of cocaine into Los Angeles in his series of newspaper articles "Dark Alliance." Webb provided evidence that United States government agents had helped to ship cocaine into the United States to raise money for the Nicaraguan Contras. Which agency facilitated the crack boom in L.A.?

Answer: CIA

For those hip hop fans out there -- the middleman drug dealer who ran between the CIA and street distributors was "Freeway" Ricky Ross -- the inspiration for former corrections officer-turned rapper Rick Ross.

Reporter Gary Webb died of two gunshot wounds to the head -- judged a suicide.
4. What is the name of the US Army Chaplain who ministered to the prisoners at Guantanamo Bay. This West Point graduate was arrested for sedition in 2003 and spent more than seventy days in solitary confinement until the charges against him were dropped.

5. Thomas Drake worked for the National Security Agency. He leaked information to a reporter, and was charged under the Espionage Act, facing up to 35 years in prison. What issue caused Drake to speak up?

Answer: Waste in government email snooping programs

Drake believed that several government email/data gathering and analysis programs were wasteful. He argued inside the NSA for a more precise version of the data sniffing programs, and when rebuffed turned to "The Baltimore Sun".

On June 9, 2011, all ten charges against Drake were dropped. He plead guilty to one minor charge and received one year probation and some community service.
6. What is the common name of the document leaked by Daniel Ellsberg and Anthony Russo. This collection of documents was a secret government history and analysis of the Vietnam War. "The New York Times" published excerpts from the document.
