Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who or what is Otzi?

Answer: A frozen mummy found in the Alps

The 5,300 years old male frozen mummy was found in September 1991. Only his head and shoulders were showing, the rest of his body was encased in ice.
2. Where was Otzi found?

Answer: On the border between Austria and Italy

Because his body was encased in ice, it was very difficult to remove it without damaging it.
3. Who found Otzi?

Answer: A couple of German hikers

A German couple from Nuremberg, Erika and Helmut Simon, found him while on a hike. They called the police, thinking it was a recently deceased mountaineer, but it soon became evident that this body was much, much older.
4. Why the name Otzi?

Answer: He was found in the Otztal Alps

He has also been called the Iceman, but when they started calling him Otzi, the nickname stuck.
5. What condition was Otzi in when found?

Answer: He was wearing sophisticated clothes and carrying tools

Otzi was wearing very well crafted clothes, a cap, a cloak of woven grass, leggings, a loincloth, and leather shoes similar to those worn by Eskimos.
He also had with him quite an array of tools, a copper axe (very valuable in Neolithic times), a knife, a dagger, a quiver with 14 arrows, a belt pouch with 3 flints, a bone awl, a piece of tinder and medicinal plants.
6. Where is Otzi now?

Answer: In a museum in Bolzano, Italy

The preliminary examination of the body was made at the University of Innsbruck, where he had to be refrigerated immediately to prevent damage.
He is now in Italy because, after surveying the border between Austria and Italy, it was determined that he had been found 101 yards inside Italy.
He is now displayed in a refrigerated case at the Museum of Archaeology in Bolzano, Italy.
7. What was the cause of death?

Answer: Not known for certain

Several theories have been advanced, and many of them have been disproved. Short of being Otzi back to life, no theory will ever be proven 100%.
8. A thorough analysis of his body determined that:

Answer: He died in spring or summer

In his stomach were found 30 types of pollen from plants that grow in spring or summer. They also found traces of several ailments he suffered from. His age was around 45 years old and his last meal had consisted of ibex meat and grains.
9. What was his most probable occupation?

Answer: Any of these

The size of his tibia, femur and pelvis shows that he walked a lot on uneven terrain, so he could have been a high altitude shepherd, but he also had copper particles and arsenic in his hair, so he could have been involved in copper smelting. He also had numerous tattoos all over his body, but mostly on the joints, which suggest he might have practiced some form of acupuncture. From his teeth enamel it was also determined that he grew up nearby, north of Bolzano, but later moved 50 km. farther north.
10. Was a DNA analysis performed?

Answer: Yes, with amazing results

The amazing result is that they found 19 genetic relatives of his in the surrounding area.
A team of scientists at the University of Innsbruck found 19 men related to the mummy by using DNA samples taken from 3,700 blood donors from the South Tyrol.
It was also discovered that Otzi had brown hair, brown eyes, he was lactose intolerant and carried the risk of heart disease.
