Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The German Kaiser was reputed to have referred to the 1914 British Expeditionary Force as a " ... Little Army".

Answer: Contemptible

Although Kaiser Wilhelm II probably never really said this, the nickname 'Old Contemptibles' was proudly worn by the members of the original B.E.F.
2. On January 19th 1917 what major event occurred at Silvertown Essex, east of London?

Answer: Munitions factory explosion

The Brunner-Mond explosives factory had an accidental fire and explosion which killed 73 people. It was the largest explosion ever to occur anywhere near London.
3. When the Munster Fusiliers attacked their ' V ' beach on the Gallipoli Peninsular in 1915, what derelict ship was used as a sort of 'trojan horse' to land them, with rather disastrous results?

Answer: River Clyde

Holes were cut in it's side and gangways attached for disembarkation. The landing took place but with massive casualties. The credit for any success at all is often given to the fact that 8 hotchkiss machine guns were mounted in the bows. It was their covering fire that enable the landing to succeed.
4. Lieutenant William Leefe Robinson was awarded the Victoria Cross for doing what in 1916?

Answer: Shooting down the first Zeppelin

He was awarded the VC for shooting down the first airship (L21) over London on the night of 2nd,3rd September 1916.
5. What was a German pickelhaube?

Answer: a helmet

This spiked helmet was of Prussian origin. It was replaced in 1916 by the steel helmet. This was mainly for greater protection from shrapnel which it was discovered was the major cause of head wounds, rather than small arms fire.
6. How old was Manfred von Richthofen the 'Red Baron' when he died?

Answer: 25

He was 11 days short of his 26th birthday when he was killed on April 21st 1918. There has been controversy ever since about whether he was shot by RAF Canadian pilot Capt Roy Brown or by Australian machine gunners on the ground. He was buried at Bertangles cemetary with full military honours. The funeral party was lead by members of the Australian Flying Corps.
7. In what year did the first tank to tank battle take place?

Answer: 1918

The first tank to tank duel took place on April 24 1918, during an attack of the German 2nd Army, which was supported by all of the German tank units, against Anglo-French forces near Villers-Bretonneux. German Tank 561 'Nixe', an A7V, encountered three British Mk IVs. All the tanks involved were damaged and there was no clearly victorious side.
8. In 1918 after almost reaching Paris the Germans withdrew to a prepared, very strong defensive line. This was called the 'what ?' Line by the allies.

Answer: Hindenburg

The Germans constructed the Hindenburg Line and gave up ground to fall back into the well prepared defensive position in February-March 1917. After the failure of their March 1918 offensive they once again took up position in the Hindenburg Line. It was finally breached on 29th September 1918, and, this being World War 1, at the usual great cost of life.
9. What date did Cuba declare war on Germany?

Answer: April 7th, 1917

The day after the United States did so.
10. In what year did Kaiser Wilhelm II die?

Answer: 1941
