Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand by Gavrilo Princip set in motion a series of events that culminated in the outbreak of WWI. What was the name of the Serbian terrorist organization to which Princip belonged?

Answer: Black Hand

Princip attempted suicide twice before standing trial; he died in prison in 1918 of tuberculosis. Black September was a Palestinian terrorist group, Blackshirts were Italian Fascist supporters of Mussolini, and the Black Death was the plague the ravaged Europe in the Middle Ages. (The name "Blackshirts" was also given to a range of Fascist organizations, including Oswald Moseley's British Union of Fascists).
2. Germany had only three allies in World War I. One was Austria-Hungary. What were the other two?

Answer: The Ottoman Empire and Bulgaria

They fought against the Entente - Russia, Britain and France, and their empires and Japan. In April 1917 the US entered the war on the side of the Entente.
3. At the start of WWI, Germany hoped to avoid a prolonged two-front war by winning a quick victory in the West. They did this by invading France through what neutral country?

Answer: Belgium

In a treaty signed in 1839 (renewed in 1875) Belgian neutrality was guaranteed by Britain, France and Prussia (later Germany). The German invasion of neutral Belgium prompted the British to enter the war immediately. (Britain would almost certainly have entered the war anyway, but this violation of Belgian neutrality made it politically much easier for the British government - at least domestically).
4. Germany's massive forces closed in on Paris in the autumn of 1914, but were thwarted in their bid for a quick victory when the allies won this battle. Which?

Answer: First Battle of the Marne

Germany hoped to march into Paris to force a quick surrender but were stopped at the First Battle of the Marne. Both sides then "fanned out" and later dug in, and a devastating four year conflict ensued.
5. What new weapon was first unleashed at the Second Battle of Ypres?

Answer: Poison Gas

The Germans unleashed an experimental mustard gas, causing a temporary break in the allied lines. But the gas dissipated rather quickly, and Canadian troops filled the gap and stopped the German advance.
6. What was the greatest naval battle of World War I?

Answer: Battle of Jutland

It took place in 1916 off the Jutland peninsula of Denmark. While the battle was considered a draw, the German surface fleet was no longer a factor in the war.
7. What was Woodrow Wilson's campaign slogan when he ran for re-election in 1916?

Answer: He kept us out of war

Wilson had won a narrow victory over Charles Evans Hughes. Five months after his re-election, he asked Congress for a declaration of war on Germany and its allies. "Extremism in the defense of liberty" was from a speech by Barry Goldwater in 1964.
8. What new weapon was first used in the battle of the Somme in 1916?

Answer: Tanks

The British introduced the tank in this extremely bloody and costly battle but failed to use it effectively till August 1918.
9. After initial failures in the Middle East, the British eventually conquered territory in Iraq, Palestine, and Transjordan. From what country or empire did the British take these territories?

Answer: Ottoman Empire

The Ottoman (Turkish) Empire entered the war on the side of the Central Powers in an effort to expand its influence and territory. Despite heavy losses in 1915 in the 1915 Battle of Gallipoli, the British recovered by 1917 to make huge territorial gains and eliminate the Ottoman Empire from the war.
10. The Russian Revolution effectively ended Russia's participation in the war. What was the name of the treaty that Russia negotiated with Germany to get out of the war?

Answer: Treaty of Brest-Litovsk

The Russians were so desperate to get out of the war, they gave up vast areas of territory to the Central Powers (including much of Poland, the Baltic states and the Ukraine). This allowed Germany access to the natural resources of the area and enabled them to focus their troop strength entirely on the western front.

The Treaty of Ghent ended the War of 1812, the Treaty of Frankfurt ended the Franco-Prussian War, and the Treaty of Portsmouth ended the Russo-Japanese War.
11. What was the primary reason for the U.S. entering the war?

Answer: Germany's unrestricted submarine warfare

Germany hoped to force the British to surrender with a blockade by resuming unrestricted submarine warfare in the Atlantic in early 1917. As American shipping losses grew, public opinion in the U.S. turned against Germany. The explosion of the U.S.S. Maine prompted the Spanish-American War.
12. Another factor in bringing the U.S. into the war was an intercepted communication in which Germany promised territory and money to Mexico if it attacked the U.S. What was this known as?

Answer: Zimmermann Telegram

The Zimmermann telegram was intercepted by the British and made public in the U.S. The Germans knew their resumption of unrestricted submarine warfare would bring America into the war; they hoped that a Mexican invasion would force the U.S. to keep many of its armed forces at home.

The Schlieffen plan was Germany's military strategy for a quick victory on the western front, and the Fourteen Points was Wilson's plan for the Central Powers surrender and postwar peace.
13. In asking Congress for a declaration of war, Woodrow Wilson said the U.S. needed to do what?

Answer: "Make the world safe for democracy"

Wilson used this term in asking Congress for a declaration of war against the Central Powers. "Guarantee peace for our time" was the term used by British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain after he signed the Munich Agreement with Hitler in 1938.
14. The U.S. declared war on the Central Powers in April of 1917, but (other than a morale boost) did not make a major impact on the war until this battle in 1918.

Answer: Chateau-Thierry

Germany launched one final massive offensive in 1918 an attempt to win the war before American industrial and military might could make a big impact. During the Second Battle of the Marne, the Germans were advancing towards Paris until they were halted by the Americans at Chateau-Thierry. American, British, and French forces then launched a counter-offensive that proved decisive.

The Battle of the Bulge was fought in World War Two, the Third Battle of Ypres was fought between the British and Germans, and the batttle of Verdun was in 1916 between the French and Germans.
15. Where was the armistice (ceasefire) ending the fighting signed?

Answer: Compiegne

It was signed on 11th November 1918 in a railroad car in Compiegne.

When France surrendered to Germany in World War Two, Hitler made the French sign the surrender in the same railroad car. It was later destroyed.
