Answer: They were interned

Conditions in these internment camps varied but were usually very harsh. The whole issue has been a matter of much controversy.

"In 1988, Congress passed and President Ronald Reagan signed legislation which apologized for the internment on behalf of the U.S. government. The legislation said that government actions were based on "race prejudice, war hysteria, and a failure of political leadership".

Nazis, always efficient in their murders, found that Zyklon B killed people fast. However, at Chelmno, Belzec, Sobibor and Treblinka they used carbon monoxide.

Answer: June 1940

In September 1939 German nationals in Britain were categorized, and refugees who could produce evidence that they were genuine were exempt from internment. Only Germans under suspicion or of unclear status were interned. However, in the course of the evacuation from Dunkirk, a number of civilians were brought to Britain.

Some sections of the popular press raised the cry: "Intern the lot!" As a result, even refugees from Nazi Germany were interned. The categorization process was repeated and some were released after about 7-8 weeks, but others were interned for longer - in some cases much longer.
