Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which country did Germany invade, thus beginning World War II?

Answer: Poland

Czechoslovakia had been dismembered by Germany in 1938-39. Following the German invasion of the 'rump' of Czechoslovakia in March 1939, Britain promised to support Poland if its independence was threatened by force. This promise - initially verbal - was formalized later in 1939 but was fully in force at the time of the German invasion. Britain and France declared war on Germany on 3 September 1939, two days after the start of the German invasion.
2. In 1939, Adolf Hitler was the German leader and Neville Chamberlain was the British Prime Minister. But who was leading France?

Answer: Edouard Daladier

Edouard Daladier was the Prime Minister of France briefly in 1933 and again in in 1934, and then from mid 1938 till 1940. He had unsuccessfully pleaded for a tougher line against Germany in 1936-38. He resigned the premiership in March 1940 due to internal dissent in the French government.
3. What name is generally given to British and French policy towards Germany and Italy in the period 1935-38?

Answer: Appeasement

This policy is particularly closely associated with Neville Chamberlain and the Munich agreement. However, it began under the premiership of Stanley Baldwin, if not earlier. The assumption behind it was that Germany had genuine grievances and that if most of these were redressed, Germany could in some sense be 'tamed'. It represented a spectacular failure to understand the Nazis.
4. When Hitler invaded Poland he had only one active ally (of sorts). Which country was it?

Answer: The Soviet Union

Although they weren't officially fighting with him, the Soviet Union and Germany had a signed a non-aggression pact in August 1939. Secret clauses of the pact provided for carving up most of eastern Central Europe between the two countries. Italy didn't enter the war till 1940 and Bulgaria and Hungary entered the War the following year - in all three cases on the side of the Axis.
5. When Churchill was made British prime minister in 1940, what did he say in his first speech as prime minister that he had to offer the British people?

Answer: Blood, toil, tears and sweat

This was in his first speech as Prime Minister. It was first made in the House of Commons on 13 May 1940 and was broadcast nationwide that evening on the radio.
6. Which two Scandinavian countries were invaded by Germany?

Answer: Norway and Denmark

Sweden were neutral and Finland were Nazi supporters.
7. The Japanese bombed the American fleet in Pearl Harbor, bringing the US into the War. But which state is Pearl Harbor located in today?

Answer: Hawaii

The American fleet was completely unprepared for the attack, and suffered huge losses both in men and vessels.
8. What was the code name for the 1944 operation in which a mass allied invasion of France would try to defeat Germany?

Answer: Operation Overlord

Operation Overlord was the official title; D-Day was just the code name for the landing day. Operation Dynamo was the code name for the 1940 Dunkirk evacuation and Operation Barbarossa was the German invasion of the Soviet Union in 1941.
9. What was the legal status of Spain in the War?

Answer: Neutral

Although dictator Franco favoured the Axis, he kept Spain neutral. It had only just emerged from an extremely destructive civil war and would hardly have been in a position to fight in World War II.
10. The war in Europe ended in May 1945, but when did the war in the Pacific conclude, ending World War II?

Answer: September 1945

The war with Japan ended very soon after the dropping of the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki by the Americans. This forced the Japanese government to abandon their no-surrender policy.
