Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. On September 1, 1939, Hitler started WWII with a "blitzkrieg" invasion of which European country?

Answer: Poland

In August 1939 Hitler had negotiated the Soviet-German non-aggression pact (which he later broke) in order to avoid unforeseen Soviet intervention. The German army sped through Poland, in a "blitzkrieg". (Blitzkrieg means lightning war in German.)
2. What was the name of the battleship upon which the Japanese surrendered to General Douglas MacArthur?

Answer: U.S.S. Missouri

President Harry S Truman was born in Missouri, so he wanted the surrender to be signed on the USS Missouri.
3. Who was the German general (known as the "Desert Fox") who was forced to retreat into Tunisia (in North Africa), fled to Germany and later helped direct the building of, and defense of Hitler's Atlantic Wall?

Answer: Erwin Rommel

Erwin Rommel was one of the best German generals in WWII. He was undefeated as a general until the Second Battle of Second El Alamein, when the British and Commonwealth forces stopped the German advance.
4. During the final stages of World War II in 1945, the United States used the atomic bombs against Japan at which of these cities?

Answer: Nagasaki and Hiroshima

Harry S Truman made the decision to drop the bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. These two bombs led to the Japanese surrender. It was a very hard decision for Truman.
5. Which two of these beaches were the primary US landing sites on D-Day?

Answer: Omaha and Utah

Operation Overlord began on June 6, 1944. There were five allied landing beaches: Omaha, Utah, Gold, Juno, and Sword. This took place in Normandy. This was one of the bloodiest battles in American History.
6. Who was the president of the United States for most of World War II?

Answer: Franklin Roosevelt

Franklin Delano Roosevelt was president for almost all of World War II. He died of a heart attack on April 12, 1945. Harry S Truman became the new president and made the final decisions of WWII. By one of those quirks of fate, the dates FDR's presidency (4 March 1933-12 April 1945) were very close to the period of Hitler's rule in Germany (30 January 1933-30 April 1945).
7. What word was created in World War II for violent crimes committed against groups with the intent to destroy the existence of the group?

Answer: genocide

The term "genocide" was created in 1944 by Raphael Lemkin, a Polish-Jewish legal scholar, firstly from the Greek "genos" meaning "race, stock, kind" and the ending "-cide", meaning "killing".
8. What was significant about the Tuskegee Airmen?

Answer: They helped break down racial barriers and stereotypesin the US

They were not known as the Flying Tigers, but the Flying Tigers helped save China from the Japanese before the war. The Tuskegee Airmen were the first all black air force unit. They were one of the best American units in World War II.
9. Who made the key decisions at Midway, commanded US naval and carrier forces during the battles of Midway, Iwo Jima, Okinawa, and the "Marianas Turkey Shoot"?

Answer: Ray Spruance

In the first months of World War II in the Pacific, Spruance commanded four heavy cruisers and support ships that made up Cruiser Division Five. Spruance helped very much during World War II, and was a key commander during the Battle of Midway, the turning point in the war in the Pacific.
10. This battle was referred to as the "end of the beginning" by Churchill because it stopped the German advance toward the Suez Canal. What battle was it?

Answer: Second Battle of El Alamein

"... this is not the end, it is not even the beginning of the end. But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning." These were the words that Winston Churchill used to describe the Second Battle of El Alamein. Britain held Suez Canal and Egypt. The Suez Canal was important for Britain's access to its imperial possessions (especially India, Burma [now Myanmar], Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaya, Kuwait, etc). This was the land first battle in which the Allied forces stopped the German advance.
