Question 1 of 10
1. What fact determines how much you will see with a telescope? Hint

Question 2 of 10
2. This type of telescope uses an objective glass lens. What type of telescope is this? Hint

Question 3 of 10
3. What type of objective device does a reflector use? Hint

Question 4 of 10
4. A rock steady mount is very important to have for observing. The most common type used on small refractors is the Altazimuth mount. It works by which method? Hint

Question 5 of 10
5. Equatorial mounts are generally used and preferred over altazimuth mounts. They tend to be sturdier, and come with controls to compensate for drift. What needs to be done before you can properly use an EQ mount? Hint

Question 6 of 10
6. A good telescope will always have a finder scope attached to it.

Question 7 of 10
7. You must never attempt to view the sun without a filter through any telescope because? Hint

Question 8 of 10
8. Eyepieces are essential equipment for your telescope. Most observers use low power, medium power, and high power eyepieces. What piece of equipment will boost the focal length of your eyepieces? Hint

Question 9 of 10
9. Aside from weather, what is the biggest problem backyard astronomers have when viewing objects? Hint

Question 10 of 10

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What fact determines how much you will see with a telescope?

Answer: the size of the aperture

The size of the aperture is the only determining factor. Larger apertures collect more light, thereby showing fainter objects and finer detail.
2. This type of telescope uses an objective glass lens. What type of telescope is this?

Answer: refracting telescope

Refracting telescopes are great starter scopes. They are easy to manage, and produce sharp images.
3. What type of objective device does a reflector use?

Answer: a mirror

Reflectors use a mirror as its primary objective . Glass lenses of equal size would be very expensive and would require a longer and hence heavier tube.
4. A rock steady mount is very important to have for observing. The most common type used on small refractors is the Altazimuth mount. It works by which method?

Answer: pan and tilt

Altazimuth mounts swivel freely from side to side (azimuth),and tilt up and down for altitude. It requires no special settings or adjustments. They are very easy to use.
5. Equatorial mounts are generally used and preferred over altazimuth mounts. They tend to be sturdier, and come with controls to compensate for drift. What needs to be done before you can properly use an EQ mount?

Answer: polar alignment

Before you can properly use an EQ mount, the latitude must be set along with the polar axis aligned so that it points toward the celestial pole. This procedure is known as polar alignment. It becomes easier after a short while.
6. A good telescope will always have a finder scope attached to it.

Answer: true

All high quality telescopes should include a low power finder scope or its equivalent when you purchase it.
7. You must never attempt to view the sun without a filter through any telescope because?

Answer: the solar radiation could blind you

NEVER attempt to view the sun without a solar filter, shield or lens. The concentrated solar radiation could blind you in a nanosecond. This caution is engraved on even advanced model telescopes.
8. Eyepieces are essential equipment for your telescope. Most observers use low power, medium power, and high power eyepieces. What piece of equipment will boost the focal length of your eyepieces?

Answer: a Barlow lens

A Barlow lens in either 2X or 1.5X is recommended. A 2X will increase your 32mm to 16mm,doubling its focal length.
9. Aside from weather, what is the biggest problem backyard astronomers have when viewing objects?

Answer: light pollution

Light pollution is by far the biggest problem. You can travel 20 miles beyond your urban environment and still be plagued by the sodium in the atmosphere that artificial light causes. Light pollution filters help some, but generally only work best on larger apertures.
10. Whether you use a refractor or a reflector, both are good for planetary and lunar observation.

Answer: True

Both are good for either planetary or lunar observation. Refractors show very sharp images, reflectors are superb light gatherers.
