Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where in the world might you go to find some real jungles?

Answer: Tropical rainforests

Rainforests are usually tropical, that is, between the latitudes of the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn. Temperate rainforests do also exist, such as the Great Bear Rainforest of British Columbia.
2. It is commonly believed that the jungle is full of snakes. This is not necessarily true, and most will not want to bite you, but what should you wear on your feet in the jungle?

Answer: Strong walking boots

Most fatal snake bites are received on the feet or ankles, so it makes sense to cover yours up! White training shoes or sneakers are not a good idea, as they will show up too much in contrast with the vegetation and announce your presence from a long way away. Gaiters that cover the lower leg and ankle are also useful and give extra protection.
3. What colour should you not wear in the jungles of Africa?

Answer: Blue

Blue attracts tsetse flies, which are endemic to many parts of Africa, and carry the sleeping sickness disease.

All shades of green are great, but please keep them plain: In many African countries you are advised not to wear camouflage pattern clothing as this is considered the apparel of paramilitary and terrorist organisations only - so you may get shot on sight!
4. Costa Rica is a wonderful jungle destination, with rainforests at several different altitudes, all containing different wildlife. One particular cloudforest reserve was created by a Quaker community in the mid-20th century. What is it called?

Answer: Monteverde nature reserve

Monteverde reserve, aka Reserva Biologica Bosque Nuboso Monteverde is a wonderful place to see hummingbirds, two and three toed sloths, and a wide range of cloudforest birds such as the resplendent quetzal.
5. What is the correct name for the tops of the trees in the jungle, where many creatures live permanently?

Answer: Canopy

Some birds, mammals, reptiles and amphibians all live in the canopy and nowhere else, rarely if ever descending to ground level. They are adapted to feed on flowers or fruits found high in the canopy but not on the ground. Bromeliads, cup shaped plants that grow as parasites on tree branches, collect rainwater and are home to many small creatures including some frogs.

They can also provide drinking water for some monkeys.
6. One mammal lives high in the treetops all week, but descends approximately once a week to defecate tidily at ground level. What is it called?

Answer: Three toed sloth

The three toed sloth also acts as host for a kind of moth that lives in their fur - it lays its eggs in the sloth's droppings - a great example of mutual co-operation. The sloth is a perfect example of adaptation to environment. It has very strong toenails to hang upside down from tree branches, but cannot walk on the ground as it has no heels.

It can however manage a crawl and is a strong swimmer, in case it falls off a tree into water!
7. Is it a good idea to take anti-malaria medication before and during a jungle adventure?

Answer: Yes - check on the latest guidelines for each destination

The recommended treatment for malaria varies from one destination to another, even within one country the guidelines can be completely different. There are several different strains of malaria, so travellers need to take the appropriate medication for their destination. Malaria is still a major world-wide killer, and is responsible for the deaths of many tourists who did not take preventive medication. Symptoms may not appear for weeks, by which time it can be too late to get effective treatment.
8. What happens in the jungle at night?

Answer: Nocturnal animals, such as bats and frogs, are very active

There is a very definite switch from "day shift" to "night shift". Creatures active by night use their senses of hearing and smell to go about their lives. Some predators have good night vision to hunt down prey that may be sleeping. Leopards usually hunt by night, and cheetahs by day, whilst lions and jaguars are day or night hunters.

Insects such as cicadas, and many species of frog, wait for nightfall to start calling to attract a mate. Females select a mate by listening to the one with the loudest or longest calls.

Many flowers bloom at night, using strong scents to attract insects such as moths and also small animals to pollinate them.
9. I want to go walking in the jungle in daylight. Do I need a guide?

Answer: Yes - it is very easy to become disoriented in the jungle

Local guidance is essential to ensure your safety in the jungle. Trails may be washed away by rain, or simply become overgrown in a very short space of time, and fallen trees very frequently block trails. Following running water is good advice if you find yourself alone in the jungle, say after a plane crash, but for tourists is not recommended. Using a compass may help in navigation, but it would not aid you in crossing a cliff or ravine.
10. I want to see mountain gorillas in the jungle. Where can I go to see them?

Answer: Rwanda, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo

There are only approximately 650 mountain gorillas left in the world. They all live in the same chain of mountains, the Virungas, which are spread across three countries - Rwanda, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It is possible to pre-book a permit to spend one hour observing mountain gorillas in a group with a maximum of eight people. Lowland gorillas are more widespread in several west African countries such as Gabon and Cameroon.
